O man yeah I just love buying spyware boxes from China and Russia! Any no name android box is a big no no you should watch the LTT video on what's hiding in those things.
Same. Really all this as going for it is at this point is good AI upscaling and plex support (codecs etc) if you need neither, the Apple TV is much better hardware.
This should really be around $120 at this point.

There are alternatives that are actually superior to Shield in almost every way now. For example, the Homatics Box R 4k Plus / Dune HD / Nokia 8010 / RockTek G2 devices.

Bigger issue with boycotts, is that they tell nVidia to drop it entirely.

This is my issue right now. I bought Shield Pro about 2 years ago and returned it, and Ii'm still facing the same dilema that I can't find a better alternative media player that has all the same codec support without a ton of really hard to adjust settings. Currently using an Xbox Series X for watching through Kodi + Plex, however I have to go into a secret menu to adjust the HDR settings.

No other player supports Dolby Vision / HDR + TrueHD / DTS / Lossless for my home theatre system. Might just have to bite the bullet again.
Same. I honestly don't know why it's either a $170 device + nas or step up to a $10k plus kaleidescape setup. Where is the middle ground for people like us who have a decent digitally stored home theater setup.

I think they'll give us a new one after the switch 2 comes out. Maybe we'll get 8k 12k support.

In terms of DV and HDR10+ the recent streamers are better. The Nvidia Shield is starting to show its age and can't do FEL for DV.

https://docs.google.com/spreadshe.../htmlview#

Go to the DoVI playback devices tab and look for the shield. It can't do profile 7 or 8 FEL, only MEL. Those are the two Dolby Vision profiles used for Bluray.

The recent crop of streamers can use ExoPlayer and their updated hardware decoders to decode the proprietary sound and audio formats that have been problematic, that until recently, the Nvidia Shield was the only and best at handling. That's no longer true.

While the UI is crap and there are other issues, the Fire Stick 4K Max is the cheapest stick that can be hacked/sideloaded and provides the most codec support. It's not listed in that chart but it supports FEL DV, HDR10+, DTS, Dolby Atmos, etc. It also supports both Dolby Vision container types (.mkv and dual-layer .mp4). The Shield and some other options are better at DTS lossless audio, the Fire Stick 4K Max only does Dolby lossless.

However, some people report good results with DTS Lossless decode using JustPlayer as the external player option for Jellyfin.
My Epson 5050UB can't handle DV anyways. Most ppl with HT projector setups can't. So DV is never a deal breaker. The ability to have an easy PlexServer in use and connect to an external HD are what is key for me. I would've thought there would be a new version at this point.. I'm still bitter after that last chaotic update, which broke my PMS. Going back to an older version was not a walk in the park.

For what 8k content, though? Playing on what device, too? Hell, most films are still nativeky shot in 2k.

If anything, 8k support should be the after thought. IMO, the biggest reason for an update would be a faster cpu and AV1 support

For future proofing... they won't release another one for a while based on history

i think the remove is excellent....well weighted and comfortable in hand, over lighter and smaller remotes for other streamers. Plus, when you raise the Shield Pro remote, it always lights up the buttons, where other remotes don't....another great feature not found in other streamers.

My original Shield remote died, so I bought the new remote. It is fantastic.

My old Shield handles Plex great, and when I used to use Kodi that was great too.

What models would you recommend? I'm seeing jail -breaking Firesticks as the main alternative.

This compares Kodi + Plex-Addon vs. the Plex App alone (preferred)

That's not true anymore. The recent streamers are actually better than the Shield in terms of overall playback. The Shield also can't play FEL DV Blurays.
How easy are those to use though? For girlfriend and family support vs. just myself who can go into hidden menus and tune.

I'm using KODI right now and PLEX is already an issue since the Kodi PLEX add-on cannot readily add foreign language sub-titles compared to the built in PLEX app makes super easy to find subittles.

Also my new Denon 4800h broke a lot of pass through functionality compared to my 6500h which the Xbox had no issues passing through DTS-MA/TrueHD.

I'm most concerned about Audio Passthrough support (7.2.2) + Dolby Vision/HDR (for LG OLED), that is easy to use + offers good subtitle support (PGS).

Current configuration was the Xbox was the best option and it was better than the Shield Pro but recent things broke that support. The Kodi works for me, but it doesn't work for the family + friends.

This deal gets hate every time its posted. Maybe old but the best device you can buy as Ive tested the competition. I wish it was updated but you cannot deny the capabilities of this device.

Have all the bugs been worked out of the last release? I still have no clue whether to continue avoiding it. If I recall, there weren't many features that would provide value to me. I use the Shield almost exclusively for PMS and maybe Netflix at times.

Old tech, and still overpriced.
What new tech doesn't it support? It supports 4k resolution, all of the latest video codecs, and lossless audio. Other streamers that are 'current' can't even support lossless audio...so new tech is actually 'old tech' as the Shield Pro still beats all of the competition.

do they though? I still need to run mine on 1080p because of the HDMI CEC error when I run it in 4k and that's been happening for over a year.
They do. Something else is amiss in your setup, or you have a bad unit. Sorry for your frustration though. I hate it when mistery crap happens.

No AV1
No FEL DV
No VP9.2
No HDR10+
No WiFi6

There are a number of current streamers that support lossless audio passthrough. There is so much outdated misinformation being posted by all the Shield owners.

Don't need a NAS:
$170 on sale - Shield Pro with Plex Server running on it.
$130 on sale Costco - Seagate 8TB External HD (265 MKV movies with lossless audio at 25-40GB avg size) hook up to Shield Pro. Add another drive if needed...Shield pro has 2 USBs.
$130 - External Asus Bluray Libredrive enabled drive to rip.
Around $330 to have an excellent lossless home streamer and still less expensive than both a NAS and Kaleidescape.
