I bought 4 open box excellent and 1 satisfactory in the past one month. Every single one of them is heavily used.

If you are looking for better performance/feel get the Ally. If you are looking for better battery life/3rd party support get the steamdeck.
That said, I find it helpful to view the Ally like a small form factor gaming laptop. Upgrading the internal storage and keeping the device plugged in go a long way towards enjoying it more.
If being on the go makes you more battery dependent, the Steam Deck is probably a better fit.

Get the cheapest deck and put in a 1TB A2 MicroSD and replace the SSD. Yes, the Ally is more powerful on paper, but factor in Windows + the higher resolutions (which don't look radically different on a 7" screen) and the end result is about the same. Dealing with Windows over the SteamOS is a pain, and I do like the Steam Deck's track pads. The one downside is you can't play some MP-focused games with anti-cheating components.

I've bought literally dozens of TV's, laptops, tablets etc. and often they are like new. Always have the employee open the box before purchasing. I picked up a satisfactory Ally this morning and it looks very clean with the original charger and box.

I got out of PC gaming 7-8 yr ago and so my steam library is kinda old. Been playing mostly on consoles for these years. But now with the steam deck I am getting back into gaming on a 'PC'.
I'm finding that I use the steam deck as a secondary system for most games, i.e. pick it up when gaming on the go or when I don't have the TV to myself. I use it a primary system for smaller indie games. Since I don't have a PC, I can't get myself to buy expensive AAA games for the steam deck; end up getting those for consoles. And so currently the steam deck is being used the most as a gamepass machine. It's just so convenient playing gamepass games on a portable machine, since most of them have cross-save.
But since the machine is not built for PC gamepass experience kinda sucks. One has to go through hoops to get controllers working. It's not difficult, but since I'm hardly using Steam OS, the Ally would have been better in my use case.
Anyone deciding between the two and plan to heavily use XBox gamepass, I would recommend going with the Ally.

My switch is two years old and still looks new and my steam deck has 30 hours on one game from me and I got it two weeks ago and still looks new and I bought it used on marketplace Lmao. It was also a two owner deck. Second owner had it for 4 days.
