So you knowingly sold a store a defective electronics item but you think it's them who is the problem?

You guys can just order these through valve Refurbished as of today. No need to deal with GameStop.

Deck is so good. Get the cheap one and update the m2 storage watching one of the many youtube videos. That way you can check the inside for issues while you are there.

Linux desktop is great to do just futz around great apps and I like using Edge there! I have a 128gb SD card setup to boot to windows 11 without a hitch for work. Once you have the bootloader boot to the SD card it keeps on booting to SD until you remove the SD card, or just tell it to stop again in bootloader. So it just decides it is a windows device until you tell it to stop. Windows 11 runs flawlessly now, but I really do prefer the SteamOS. I can't believe how put together it is. So game centric! It is crazy Valve did this.

Just crazy. I can get Forza 5 running in Deck mode no problem at 56-60fps nice and smooth. Just love it. You have to get Forza 5 seasonal cars in a week and when you are on vacation you can still get them after the day is done. Diablo 4 runs smoothly at 40fps high settings. You can usually figure out the right settings to make anything look great on that smaller screen.

I have a 16 core 3070 with 4k and would rather run on deck at 720p all day.

I would probably stay away from a refurb Steam Deck unless they're replacing the battery. The battery life already isn't amazing and you don't know how many cycles the previous owner may have already put it through.

Didnt see this mentioned in the first page and didnt read anymore, but Valve is selling their own refurbished decks for identical prices and they come with a 1 year warranty, so I would pass on this for Valve direct.

I absolutely love my Steam Deck and for this price it's a no-brainer however as others have said, buy refurbushed directly from Valve. Do not buy from GameStop. It is not worth the frustration if something goes wrong.

Back to the deck itself; there's so many guides and tutorials on how to do different things with it and most simple modifications are easy to recover from if something goes haywire not to mention covered by warranty. I upgraded mine to a 2 TB drive that I bought off of eBay, yes this is a little risky in terms of the quality of the eBay drive, and then set it up so I can do dual boot SteamOS or Windows 11. For certain games there's no point to using Windows 11 but if you for instance want to play Diablo 4 or something similar, it's a much better experience in Windows so I highly recommend it.

Emulation is extremely easy to do on SteamOS and there's tons of software and guides to get going. You can even emulate up to some Switch games but YMMV (check the yuzu compatibility lists). The native SteamOS is also extremely good and has something for everyone.

All in all, the Steam Deck has been a slam dunk of a device for me. Valve overwhelmingly over-delivered and really set a new standard for what the experience of a handheld device should be. My only gripe is battery life could be better but considering the reasonable performance it holds, I can't knock it.

One of my nephews has one and our kids were amazed on the variety of games they were able to play on it from different consoles, but the tinkering sounds like a deal breaker for me (and I like homebrewing from old wii days, emulators, custom android OS etc before). Is there any way to get this set up once and kids that are used to the Switch experience can be self sufficient (10 and younger) for new games etc?

The 'Pro Price' is decent and probably worth the risk. Hell, you might end up with almost new unit.

But I'd be a little hesitant about GameStop's "refurbishing" of a device that most of their staff has never seen before. Their refurb process on standard consoles is purportedly powering it on and making sure it comes with all the cables. I cannot imagine them handling a literal computer any more thoroughly than that. Luckily the Steam Deck's have not been notorious for certain failures (like the Switch) so there is less cause for concern with specific issues. Also Valve is a LOT easier to work with as opposed to Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. They even have OEM replacement parts for sale AND have videos showing you how to replace them.

But if you can wait...might be better to buy a new Deck the next time Valve has a big sale (which seems to happen 3-4 times per year).
Also, Valve has started selling officially refurbished decks for not much more than this! Worth it for the peace of mind

Kinda want to get one just to pair with xreal glasses for a portable large screen gaming setup. Anyone with experience? Is there an option to "lock" the screen to one spot?

Yes, and it's an amazing experience. You'd need the Xreal Beam accessory to lock the screen in place. Viture makes similar glasses that supposedly let you lock without an extra accessory, but you have to order them direct instead of from Amazon.

Has anyone actually purchased one from GameStop yet and can speak to its condition?

Forza 5 runs on a toaster. Im running the game on a 2009 I7-920 and at 2K scaled no less.

Absolutely the base Steam Deck experience is meant to be plug and play. The steam deck library is already very large so there's plenty to play. Once you want to expand, and get more technical, there's plenty of guides to do that as well. Emulation can be setup so that it looks just like a game from the Steam library. Launching it is as simple as launching a regular Steam game (same seamless process once setup). Getting to this point takes some work but once you get there there's no maintenance ongoing... Just play and tinker as you desire.

To echo what someone else already relied: "tinkering" is only needed if you want to play games outside of Steam's store or want to risk a game that isn't listed as "verified" or "playable." Currently they have 10,000+ games that currently meet of those two ratings (even have categories in the Steam store to only show you those games as well). 95% of other games work fine as well just have not be tested / received a stamp of approval. Anything in those two categories should work out of the box. Compared to my old Nintendo Switch I find the Steam Deck's interface and menu's to be much more intuitive than Nintendo's.

Now, if you wanted to reinvent the wheel you have that option as well. Just not needed and you'll still have one thousand lifetime's worth of games to play inside the vanilla experience.

I agree. When I had time to kill it was cool. By the time I made things worked never actually played any games. I'm not sure if the tinkering was fun or the ability to go outside system parameters.. but actual playing games never really did.

I loved rooting my old Android phones and then there was a point where I realized I was customizing more than I was using it...and I stopped HAHAHA.....
