I chose this instead of a bluetooth dongle for ease of use. I plugged it in, pressed a couple of buttons, it showed me the code. Took a picture of it with my phone. Then I cleared the code. Unplugged and done.
I could have spent that long fiddling with the bluetooth, and getting it connected.
No regrets, it did exactly what I needed.

I was going to suggest the ignition coil until you said you already replaced that. Unfortunately, these generic type of readers have never worked well for the six VWs I've owned. Trying searching VwVortex forums for your issue. Also, find some enthusiasts and/or a local shop that specializes in VW. This saved me lots of money over the years. If you happen to live near Atlanta, let me know.
