"Scammy"? Because they don't apply to you, they're "scammy"? I bought the Total Tech last year (and has decreased in price this year) and so far have a couple MacBook Pro's, a Mac Mini, AirPod Pro, and two iPads all covered with AppleCare+ which would have cost far more than the $199 I paid for Total Tech.

Do you complain about Costco and Sam's Club deals also? Sheesh...

I would strongly recommend $1200+ m1 pro mbp14 over $900+ open-boxed mba 15.

doubled RAM, doubled SSD and much better screen.

Agreed. Plenty of deals on MBP14 right now (seems to come in spurts) and $300 more for better everything (except weight) is seemingly a no-brainer unless your priority is thin and light.

Bought the 15" MacBook Air base model in June and absolutely loved the form factor… Unfortunately the 8GB RAM wasn't enough for me and the 256GB SSD, while tolerable, was cramped… ended up deciding to sell and re-buy an upgraded 15" Air (16GB RAM/512GB SSD) but ended up going with the base 14" MacBook Pro in the end. The price was so close for same memory and storage specs but all the advantages of the Pro traded off for a slightly smaller display and slightly thicker body, along with the massive re-sale value hit you take with anything above base specs.. Just couldn't do it. It's still an awesome thin and light machine that will satisfy many user's needs though.

Apple knows how to upsell by pricing and limiting base hardware.

Haha that they do! Sometimes I'll splurge and go up a tier on storage, but as I tend to upgrade many of my gizmos every year or two, I usually just buy base models (if they'll meet my near future needs at least) so I can recoup most of my money when I upgrade and re-sell. Lately, even Apple Silicon MacBooks are not holding their value like they used to, so definitely erring more to the slightly upgraded side of things and planning to hold out longer on my usual upgrade cycle. Only thing I have beyond base models right now is a 14 Pro Max at 256GB and a 3rd gen 11" iPad Pro w/ 1TB (I was able to get for $580 recently!!) so def gonna hold on to that for a long time!

I think if you have the extra $300 to spare and have a use for the upgraded specs, then this is good advice. But the Apple Silicon MacBooks are more than enough for the common person and so the majority of users aren't going to get much from the differences. If you might do some more intensive things like video editing, running VMs or IDEs, then definitely go for a Pro. If you're just using the device to surf, there's absolutely no need to burn the extra cash. I've seen so many people recommending an upsell simply because it's a better value. That's exactly how Apple's pricing strategy gets you. They space all their upgrades and pricing in such a way that you're always wondering if you should just spend the extra $100 or $200 for something that may seem like a better deal but in reality you will get no discernable benefit from.
