I can't tell you which of those options is better. Each has it's perks.

But if you want to use the drive in-house/on-prem similar to Dropbox/Google Drive app, you can install Syncthing on each system and configure what folders you want backed up. It will back up changes to the other system over the network - and even do file versioning. Great app, and free to use. No reoccurring cost and no remote (cloud) storage required.

If you have one of those targeted Amex deals you can save more. Mine was 15% off up to $15. So got the drive for $265 + tax.

Was thinking about getting a large HD to backup photos/videos from my iPhone since Apple pushes for me to continue to buy more cloud storage.

Any thoughts on buying cloud storage vs buying a 20 TB HD? I like the convenience of auto backup to the cloud but wondering if possible to auto backup to a HD from a computer.

The 16TB is on sale for 223.99 at BH. While smaller, it is a better TB value.

Thanks. I had posted an update earlier with a retraction of my original statement:

To recap my update again:
tldr:
I was able to get it for the sale price from Amazon. *
(I then cancelled my order from WD directly - I had found it was on sale for $279.99 there for the same price after posting, but shipping was slower...):

Long version:
* Amazon had apparently inadvertently updated something on the back end so that the product search results showed it for $379.99 temporarily this AM.
That was, in hindsight, a temporary situation [during the time when several of us reported that it had gone back up in price]. They fixed it again later today.

In any case, even while it was showing $379.99 in the search results, as someone else had confirmed, adding it to the cart dropped the total to $279.99 before tax.

I do know for a fact that initially when I saw the deal, even the search results showed $279.. But then the price (price displayed, not amount charged after the discount) suddenly changed to $379.99 while debating whether to get the EasyStore or Elements version with the power button - same drive though.

My receipt shows the item price as $379.99 but the order summary shows the "deal of the day" $100 discount being applied to reduce the price.

The deal was never dead in any case...

You will still want a backup to this drive; drives fail, and a loss of data in this magnitude for an individual will be massive. Cloud isn't ideal alone either as access loss due to a variety of reasons is just as bad. Anyway, if it's important and irreplaceable, make sure you have redundancies.
