Nice early BF deal. Was just eyeing this model at BestBuy/Costco last week when they were on sale for $1,049. Decided to wait. Now that I know the price will indeed drop, I might see if there will be a deal on the 16GB/512GB version as we get closer to BF. -Edit- I'm a dumb dumb who can't read. This is the Air. I had been eyeing the Pro for the price mentioned above. The wait continues!
A good price for a great computer. I will say I grabbed an 8GB one like this first and while I was happy with it I was soon hitting swap memory fairly regularly.

As far as I could ever tell that didn't really affect my day to day usage at all but I opted to return it for a 16GB version so that it is more capable longer into the future because otherwise I absolutely love this machine and don't see needing to upgrade for a long time.
My portable drive has 4 times more storage than your phone. What's your point?

Needed a computer for work (since we're moving back into office) and was debating between the mac mini or laptop. End up pulling the trigger after contemplating about 8gb ram, but realized that I have used MBP & MBA Intel 4gb for work for the past 10+ years and it has been ok. Excel, PDF, dropbox, work email, and a couple social media tabs open (FB, personal email, youtube)... it was able to run everything at once pretty nicely.

Currently have an iMac M1 16/512 for my home office and MBP M1Pro 16/512 for on the go. I think the M2 8/256 should be fine for work since we mostly have the cloud storage to store work related information. Ending up purchasing two (also for my SO) of this. We'll test it out before the return window expires.

these had SSDs with performance issues - on models below 512GB? or below 1TB?

Base M2 laptops w/ 256gb storage have single 256gb chip vs old M1 laptops that came with 2x128gb chips making it perform better

512gb config has 2x256gb chips so its fine

How much does this difference impact, say, XCode Benchmark, which hammers the disk for the entire duration of the test?

You can google "m2 256 vs 512 speeds"

I'm familiar with the benchmark. That's exactly one benchmark, measuring exactly one thing - sequential access, which is almost pointless in a modern operating system. If I copy large ISO files back and forth to Thunderbolt disks (but not network, because that won't stress anything, and not USB3, because that won't stress anything) and *also* doing high disk IO activities at the same time, there might be some slowdown noticed. Maybe.

In the real world (or, at least, the simulated real world of building Xcode jobs), one can see (https://github.com/devMEremenko/XcodeBenchmark) that it makes essentially zero difference. (Note the same model M2, one with 256 and one with 512. Throw in more memory on the 512 for more fun...)

Again, in the real world, doing actual things that hit the disk.

Not just reading massive sequential files that almost nobody needs to do...

The article you posted couldn't find differences either, when actually using it, and could only guess and gesture....:
That said, will these particular differences impact you? People the Air is marketed to will likely not see a life-changing contrast between the 256GB and 512GB models when it comes to everyday performance. I ran two 4K YouTube videos over 25 open Chrome tabs for 30 minutes on both machines without either needing to dip into swap memory. Boot time was also pretty identical — I turned the two devices on side by side a number of times. And I didn't see much of a difference when it came to opening any of the apps I normally use, including Chrome, Safari, Messages, Photos, Activity Monitor, Slack, Music, etc.

I suggest we move past this endless repetition of pointless data.

I can add 2TB ssd for around $100 into $300 laptop. Tell me which mac can do it.
None, and i'm perfectly fine without that option. Windows sucks, and I want nothing to do with it.
