People aren't exactly being smart by paying premium prices for low specs just because it's Apple. As long as there's a market for 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD at a high price, Apple has no incentive to change anything. They'll stick to their strategy until market demand forces them to shift.
100%. I urge more and more people to vote with their wallet because every single person who complains on a forum about 8GB not being enough is doing exactly nothing to sway Apple. I'm not hopeful though because for every person who is savvy enough to hold out for raised min. specs, there's 400 clueless people who just buy whatever is the lowest model for their kid, grandparent, etc.
Demand more, people. Who cares if "MacOS uses memory more efficiently than Windows".

Why is 8GB not enough? I use my M2 8GB for software development (running multiple VMs). Photo editing in Lightroom and Topaz. Some video editing in iMovie, and other day to day things that run fine.
I get if you're doing more pro things (large video files, graphics ray tracing, large batch processing of photos etc) then you'd need more. But I think for a lot of people 8GB is enough and at this price is good value.

Some people use it differently. I need as much space available on the macs, I can't fathom 256gb and could settle for 512/1tb.
At the same time my 32gb ipads are empty because i am reading/streaming on wifi.
There a tons of people doing the above backwards: having specced out ipads and bare bones macs because youtube and googling doesn't need ram/ssd upgrades.

My main argument is futureproofing (esp. since Apple hardware tends to last alongside the OS updates) and headroom for your needs to change. And if you think 8GB is good value, it's only because you choose to believe it's so IMO. If everyone tomorrow refused to buy until Apple upped to 16GB min, Apple would give it to everyone.
I always side with the notion of people getting more for their money, but I won't flame anyone who's happy with 8GB. It is what it is.

I get that everyone uses their devices differently, but that doesn't mean Apple should charge premium prices for lower specs on their Macs. Just because some people don't need a lot of storage or RAM doesn't justify the markup on the base models. Apple's prices are already high, and charging a premium for base models with just 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD is hard to justify. That's $400 extra for specs that really should be standard in 2024, especially when competitors offer better specs as their base models at a lower price.
It's frustrating because people are essentially paying for the Apple logo, while missing out on the performance and longevity they deserve. Apple could easily offer better specs, but as long as people are willing to pay for low end models, they won't change.

I'm sorry, but I really doubt your claim about running multiple vms

100%
also why do people defend Apple so hard saying 8gb is enough and good value. Having the laptops start at 16gb is a $10-15 difference tops. Its not about saving you money, its about getting people to upgrade to the 16gb for $200 or whatever they are charging you nowadays for ram and ssd space
