As far as I could ever tell that didn't really affect my day to day usage at all but I opted to return it for a 16GB version so that it is more capable longer into the future because otherwise I absolutely love this machine and don't see needing to upgrade for a long time.

MacBook isn't a magic and it would lag. The benefit is the battery life and integration with iPhone.

Depends if you want the small improvement. M2 has 0.3" bigger screen, about 20% faster processor, newer form factor, 1080p vs 720p webcam and a bit bigger battery, but 50% slower ssd and runs a bit hotter than M1.
The performance is probably a wash in most use cases. Even though I like the new design, you can't beat the price on M1 air. I bought M1 and will probably upgrade to M4 or M5 later on.
