I used this about 10 years ago, and it worked ok. It is a lot of physical labor, if you want to do it properly. I removed and labeled all the doors and all the hinges from both the doors and the cabinets.
Then used the provided deglosser to remove any oils and other contaminants from the wood, before applying primer and the paint. But there's not enough paint or primer, and I couldnt find anymore of the same color at Home Depot.
Ended up switching over to the Benjamin Moore cabinet paint and it came out beautifully. Though, I did apply two coats of primer and two coats of paint.
I purchased and used the White kit 4 years ago. Had a really positive experience with it - the paint dries and creates a hard coating that is very resistant to scratching/chipping. In fact, I don't have any chipping on my cabinets in 4 years. My only gripe with it was that the kit did not cover as much as it claimed it would, so I had to go to home depot to buy an extra kit. I couldn't just buy similar colored white paint because the texture was different than their offerings.
I've used this on my cabinets. The clear coat provided yellowed after about 3 years. So now I have yellow cabinet instead of white. It's slight, but noticeable. Probably not a problem if you go for a darker base color.

Any hope for cabinets that someone already did a crappy paint job on that doesn't involve sanding everything down to bare? Trying to buy some time before replacing and just make things look better. 😬

Exactly this. If you are wanting to go pure white, I would go with a different option. I would go with primer and a high quality cabinet paint. I learned this the hard way. If you are going a darker color this kit works fine.
So I've been pondering on painting my kitchen cabinets before but my other issue is the inside of these 80s cabinets are like particle boards, so I can't really paint them (not smooth looking)… what can I do? Trying to save money by not having to rip and replace. Very tedious work having to repaint but don't just want the outside to look good either. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!!
I have this kit in Espresso if anyone wants to trade a $5 gift card for it. Still brand new. We bought it and then decided to use a lighter color and have a contractor do it instead.
My color options come up as Espresso or Gray (not available in California). Both were still $30
the little shit california law makers worry about...they have more resources for these agency that nip pick on how efficient an LED bulb has to be, or the type of paint/stain than in places that require them like stopping crime.
Lil off-topic but any suggestions on re-finishing/painting a marble top on a double vanity? I like the cabinet itself but not the type/color of marble previous owner chose for the top. I'm fine with it not looking like marble in the end...single solid color, matte would be fine, for example.
Will eventially remodel the bathroom but figure I could get a few years out of it with a few cosmetic changes.
Look up stone coat countertops on YouTube. I bought their stuff and redid our old beat up granite countertop and it came out amazing!

How difficult was it to make it look good? They make it look so easy in their videos but I am really skeptical of it. I've been thinking of getting one of the kits and starting with a small section of countertop in my laundry room before deciding if I want to do the whole kitchen counter.
I did the cabinets with the system back in 2011. I used the degloser and the clear coat but wife did not like the color options so we used Behr instead to get the color she wanted. Turned out great but you definitely have to do the prep work and be patient. I think we went without cabinet doors for a month between painting the face and cabinets. Just went slow and did a little each day. We did have very slight yellowing, (I noticed but wife didnt) but I believe ours was from the tobacco/tar bleeding thru from the previous homeowners.

I've been close to pulling the trigger on this multiple times for the last two years. Theres a ton of kits you can purchase and hundreds of videos you can see. I think a lot of it comes down to your handiness, patience (it'll take a whole day or two of work), and your expectations.
I'd expect myself to be pretty happy with it, as epoxy often levels itself out and should create a nice smooth finish over the paint. It's just theres gonna be some corners or edges or spots that will no have that legitimate marble finish and you'll have to accept that if you move forward with this method. Is it worth saving thousands of dollars? That's totally up to you
I also recommend the Benjamin Moore cabinet paint, I believe it's a water-encapsulated-oil paint. Cleans/thins with water but it's actually oil-based so it's more chip resistant. BM also makes an excellent high-end primer that we had to use as the wood stain kept bleeding through the regular BM primer.
basically what we did, Benjamin Moore cabinet paint and their high end primer. after having so much cabinet paint left over we did the dinning room too.
Benjamin Moore is the kind of paint the Pros use, costs a little more but you get more. refinishing cabinets with thin veneer didn't work for us with stain/varnish, the cabinet paint made a huge and easy difference. we sanded and cleaned everything. seems to last a long long time.

an electric orbital sander is easy if you do it outside. Benjamin Moore Cabinet paint is your friend along with a good primer.
