Asus has terrible quality control. I have returned 2 of these so far, purchased brand new. Left stick went bad after about a week, the 2nd one had a bad track pad. Oh.. and microSD card also got fried, which Asus really doesn't have a fix for.

"Track Pad"? There isn't one on the Ally. Try again.

You can find a credit card that offers an extended warranty to save you on the extra cost.
If you buy new. If you buy used that doesn't generally apply. However, taking advantage of the sign on credit card reward bonus usually does the trick.

an HOUR? Well thanks. I WAS looking at these until I saw THAT.
For decent gaming battery life in the three or so hours you need to game at 10 Watts. The Z1 Extreme just doesn't do as well as the Steam Deck at this wattage. Steam Deck is the way to go for portable 10 Watt gaming.

I run the Ally at custom settings at 18 watts as I find that is the best balance between performance and battery life. I get 90 minutes to 2 hours that way and that tradeoff works for me for the boost in performance.

Windows OS is what killed all my interest in the ROG Ally. The SteamOS along with small plugins is pretty solid and battery life is great IMO. I didn't hear about the failure rates of microSD cards though thats definitely a no no and with all the problems that faced Asus Warranty and their motherboards the company has lost a lot of credibility. Just my two cents tho~!
I get this and I like the Steam Deck, but Proton is what killed my interest in the Deck. Windows makes it easy to play whatever I want from any service I want with no tinkering. The tradeoff is Windows updates, but I've been dealing with those for nearly 30 years so I'm used to it.

legion go has switch style replaceable controllers, making it the one to get for anyone that wants to keep it running (usually for playing older pc games and console emulation purpose)
The sticks in the Steam Deck and Ally are very easy to replace and it is a fairly cheap repair. There are guides online. I get the idea of just buying new controllers for the Go when they wear out, but that seems expense and they would have to still be made. You would probably have to take them apart and replace the sticks just like everything else.

If only the Ally does not fry SD card, I would get it at this price. Otherwise pass, wait for Legion Go "honey moon" period over to see if any deal breaker pop up. Hopefully none.

In for one. I was really debating on getting one open box for around $550 or just getting the legion go. Dropping to $470 post legion go launch settled it for me. My biggest concern was using it a few years down the line with a mobile GPU seeing as the legion go supports thunderbolt 4 and the ally uses a proprietary port but screw it I'll take one at that price.
