Got my order for 2 phones delivered today, and got them both activated to start the countdown clock on the unlock. For anyone who bought one just to activate for the one-month plan you purchased and unlock, the easiest way is the automated phone service (the online process wasn't working for me):

1) 1-877-430-2355
2) Press 2 to Activate Device
3) Press 2 for a New Number
4) Follow voice prompt to enter IMEI, ZIP code, create PIN, etc. When asked by the prompt if you want to "add to an existing account", say "No". If you purchased a plan with the phone, it will recognize this and automatically activate the SIM for the plan.

When the voice prompt tells you to power on the device, the instructions were incomplete and unclear. If you've never activated a phone before here are the steps:

1) Attached to the box for your phone is the associated SIM card in a pouch; remove and punch out the nano-SIM.
2) Using the SIM tool in the iPhone box (or a small paperclip), pop out your SIM card tray and insert the nano-SIM.
3) Re-insert the SIM tray into the iPhone and power on the phone.
4) Go through the setup process; I recommend connecting to WiFi when prompted to make things go faster.
5) Your phone should be activated within a few minutes of being powered on with the SIM inserted, assuming you went through all the steps in the automated phone activation.

So no luck at Tega Cay, SC Walmart. They did have at least 2 in stock. The guy was nice looking into it for 30 mins or so. He finally found out the Walmart had to have the WARP system for in-store phone activation so call up or local Walmart to ask if they have that. He mentioned the store in Rock Hill, SC on Dave Wylie had the WARP system.

I'm not going to waste my time going there, but thought I'd help others. Be sure to call the local Walmart you are going to, ask if they have the phone in stock (both stores said online they didn't have stock, but both stores did have them in stock) and ask if they have the WARP system for activation. Good luck everyone.

Yes done it three times now. Use it a few times with the straighttalk network for a few days first though. Text, call, browse then 61 days later unlocked.

It sounds like they didn't activate it right. When you log in, you should see a line and phone number associated with it under the "Manage Lines" section. Did they give you a second printout sheet of your plan activation PiN? It's a long string of something like 15 characters.

Also, have you tried popping the SIM in and see if it works?
I haven't open the box yet. I was told the plan was already attached to the sim. You were saying if the device shows up in account as active, it would unlock without open the box.

Hello, I'm hoping someone here can help clarify this. If I just bought one with a $35 plan at the store, did/does my plan (and I suppose subsequently the unlock timer) get started right upon activation?

Or does it start when I unbox and put SIM card in?

Asking because I got a couple devices and would like to utilize the plan one month after the other on each, not in a rush to get the 60 day unlock as long as I do eventually get it.

Thank you for taking the time to answer.

You should be good to go with starting the 60 day clock to unlock as long as you have activated the devices. Go into online account and confirm activation was successful.
The text only confirms the unlock date. Not sending it does not delay unlock

That has been my experience. I have activated several without turning them on or opening them. And I currently have a couple more going that way and the line shows up under "Manage Lines" with a phone number and IMEI in device info. But obviously, you wouldn't necessarily notice if a problem cropped up. If yours isn't showing up with an active number, you definitely need to look into it further.

Can this phone be used abroad, say in Asia? Thanks!
Not sure if I'm understanding your question, but yes this phone should work in Asia after it's been unlocked. You will need to purchase service in whatever country you're going to. Prepaid SIMs in Asia are pretty inexpensive (based on my limited experience in Malaysia). You can also purchase eSIMs online if you want service from the moment you hit the ground.

However, I doubt it will work while using the ST account. I don't think any US prepaid services offer free overseas roaming. I think that's only on postpaid plans, and often with extra fees.

So you sign up for a new device new plan instore with a new email, come back setup account with forgetting password, the phone number and imei shows up in account as active. Or do you add device to your existing account instore?

When I purchased mine for this deal, I gave them new emails that weren't associated with any ST account. Then, after the purchase, I logged in at ST using "forgot password" and my line showed up under "Manage Lines". It showed a phone number and said "29 days remaining" (and been counting down since then) and the IMEI of the phone showed up under device info.

I don't think it's necessary to set up an account, unless you want to verify and manage it online. If you just want this phone to unlock so you can use it with a different carrier after 60 days, you shouldn't need to do anything.

If you want to add it to an existing ST account, then I'm not sure. For some reason, the WM reps want unique email addresses for each phone, but I don't see anything in the Terms and Conditions that say this is for new customers only. If you already have an ST account, you can try giving them your established email and see what happens. Worst case, the discount won't show up and you refuse to pay for the phone. They will probably find a way to either fix it or change to another email address.

Is this still a good deal at $99 for the iPhone SE? Walmart is starting to get rid of this deal like Straight Talk. I'm seeing signs being put up in Walmart stores that the phone will be $99 with activation instead of $49. If the price will be the same in-stores at Walmart as the Straight Talk website, it might be better to just buy from Straight Talk instead so you don't have to deal with clueless Walmart associates and shady OSC contractors.
As of 5 minutes ago, both the Straight Talk website and the WM site are offering this phone at $49 with activation. Both sites say the deal is good thru 11/26. You may want to visit the sites and take screenshots before you go to WM.

Sounds like your WM store is just trying to avoid honoring the deal. It's also possible that WM corporate screwed up in their internal communications to their field managers.

At my local store, they took down the $49 sign earlier this week and put up the $99 sign. However, I was there on Friday to get two more phones and they had put the $49 sign backup up.

Just double-checking, but was that experience specifically with ST and iPhones? I believe you, but I want to confirm that the circumstances exactly match this situation.

I've got two phones that I would love to sell as New-In-Box, and I'm trying to understand what happens when they get powered on for the first time. I believe you or someone else had posted earlier that they will continue to be listed as locked on sickw until they are initially connected to Apple's activation servers, is that correct?

Yes, it was with ST iPhones (SE2 and SE3 for the ones I did). The phones will show as unlocked on Sickw as soon as ST unlocks them … even before the phones are powered on for the first time. The warranty info is what didn't always show accurately until first activation. However, it appears there have been some changes to how that warranty info is updated, so not sure about that.

Again, I don't want to say "this is how it will always work", as those things can always change. But that has been my experience and only something I attempted after seeing others report the same thing in past threads.

It sounds like something must not have registered it in the system properly or something. I have unlocked three sealed phones that way over the last month (and more previously), with the latest one that I just checked on sickw yesterday. That one was activated on 9/18 and sickw now shows as unlocked. I haven't opened it yet, but any phone that I've ever had show up as unlocked on sickw has always shown as unlocked on the phone itself. For my phones, those last ones were all ST phones that were activated on the TF network. I've also done it with TW phones.

What actual date did you activate the phone on the network? Keep in mind that the unlock is usually 60 days from the activation date, not purchase date. Also, the unlocks sometimes don't happen until a few days later (I've seen as late as day 65 reported).
On the 18th of September. I did submit an unlock request via tfw site. So they said by Wednesday, I'll hear about the unlock request.

yes. If you want to use the cell radio compare the bands it has to the ones active in the country you plan on using it in

Yeah, it sounds like the activation may not have been done properly. Several others have reported similar issues with not being set up right also. Here are a few screenshots of what my account pages look like for one that I purchased last week. I didn't do anything other than log in to the account using the forgot password method.
