In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

Moonlight: https://github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.
Isn't this like 6 years old?
I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

Pretty amazing this is still at 170. Has a specific use case for sure (lossless audio passthrough, one of the few boxes with 1gig lan, game streaming etc) but hard to see the value at this price when you can get a whole ass N100 mini PC for like 120 quite often
I have plenty of qualms with the Shield UI but as a dedicated appliance it's a far better overall experience than dealing with a PC in a living room. I'm speaking from experience as someone who's been streaming local content and experimenting with various solutions for almost 2 decades at this point - since the days of XBMC running on modded XBOX consoles. There's something to be be said for having a device that just works and the Shield is just that.

I do agree that it's amazing that it's still at the current price and hasn't been replaced, yet. When I got mine ~2 years ago I was concerned I was buying something that was going to be replaced imminently. Seems like NVidia just really doesn't care about this market.

Ya I don't disagree I have 3 2019 pros. Just crazy the price basically hasn't come down since launch. I guess it is a very niche product

I love that s12 pro. I've used it as a plex server. Works great for transcoding too. Has a 4 k stream transcode and it can probably do a couple more.
What do you use to operate it ? Wireless keyboard/mouse?
What are you using for an interface? Just regular Windows 10/11?

For a more versatile multi-purpose alternative at around the same price, get yourself something like a Beelink S12 mini-pc with the new intel N100 CPU (16GB RAM + 512GB SSD) for around $150 (lots of sales usually) and an air-mouse for around $20-$30. This setup gets you:

- AV1 decode
-install Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi, whatever media server on it
-bookmark all your streaming services in a browser
-run adblocks in the browser(s) or install Pi-Hole in a Docker container

Basically everything the Shield does and then some.

Disclaimer: I have multiple Shields, multiple mini-PCs running as streaming clients, a couple of hefty HTPCs running as media servers, all served by multiple NAS' - the mini-pc option is VERY viable as a streaming box.

When I tested it I had plex running on win11, as a server.
I replaced it with nuc size machines running proxmox with one instance as a win11/plex/*arr running.
