for an apples to apples comparison:

Pioneer 505 - $749
Dirac full bandwidth is included - $0
Dirac microphone is included - $0
Total - $749

Denon 3800 - $1000
Dirac full bandwidth is $349
Dirac microphone is $100
Total - $1449

So the price difference is $700, not $500. Options almost double the Denon price when making an equal comparison.

Differences are power rating 120w for Pioneer vs 105w for Denon. Sometime in 2024 Denon will add a Dirac bass control module (Not available on the Pioneer but adds another $499 for multi sub version). Or you may choose another type of sub EQ if you desire and not use this module at all.

Bang for the buck, you will have a hard time finding better performance than this Pioneer for the same money.

Hooked this up today. I have 4 rooms in the house with various setups and AVR's. I have an Onkyo NR-7100, and 2 NR-686's. This pioneer sounds best. I haven't even done Dirac yet, just their MCACC option. It sounds fantastic. YouTubetv and xfinity finally sound much better and not nearly as muffled. I don't need to raise the volume to 60 to hear announcers during basketball games clearly. Idk if it's because this has higher power output or what, but a noticeable difference. I'm not an audiophile by any means, just a guy who likes being able to hear what I'm listening to clearly. Music sounds great. HDMI 2.1 is working on my Xbox.

Running a rp-504c, rp-8000f ii, and various in ceiling speakers. 5.2.2 setup.

For amplifier nerds here is a review: https://www.audiosciencereview.co...iew.40731/

Apparently these current Pioneer receivers limit amp power after 35 seconds dropping from 44 watts to 20 watts continuous. The amp is rated for 120 watts (peak) but it doesn't seem possible to get there even in transient spikes. There aren't many music loads that would ever pull a continuous 44 watts. 20 watts is still plenty of power for most people but it just seems like bad marketing and engineering for reliability rather than power. Other than that seems like a great amp.

This... no one cares about your experience or mine, but you keep preaching...
lol now isn't that the pot calling the kettle black!

"Preach" to all of us AGAIN why this is the best receiver for this price based on benefits that aren't to YOU!

Hmmm I noticed you didn't explain your personal experience with DLBC and how you "preach" it's a "marginal increase"!? πŸ€”
Hmmmm I guess ignorance is bliss!

Still waiting for you to answer what other receiver can you buy for $750 with Dirac FB and preouts?

You can't. That is the budget here. I guess the block button does not work lol.

No, channels 10 & 11 can not be assigned they have to be powered externally.

lol clearly you're the only one going by this "budget" since so many people keep asking how this compares to other specific receivers!

What do crossovers mitigate in a setup again? πŸ€”
Let me guess that's just a marginal benefit also! 🀭

lol it has been, there isn't one.

"Preach" to us AGAIN why YOUR perimeter is the one everyone should follow/care? πŸ™πŸΌ

So what's your personal experience with DLBC in those 20 years? πŸ™πŸΌ

BTW that throttling others have pointed out, those pre outs don't change that! 🀷🏻 ♂️

Wow, finally admitted it.. took you a few pages of posts.

You're putting words in my mouth again... didn't say this is for everyone. Again, for the money the features included in this receiver are hard to beat. IMHO

Ignorance is bliss... I'm perfectly happy how my bass sounds now. If my budget was in the $2k range I would definitely spruce for the RZ-70 and be happy with it but... "I" don't need all those features.
I think it's stupid for you to cross shop a $750 item to a $1800 all in one. This is slickdeals and my ass is cheap. That $1800 unit better sound 150% better if I'm going by logic.

What throttling? LOL πŸ˜†
Those horrible measuring DAC chips in your x3800h are not removable but no one wants to talk about those huh!?

LOL "Again, for the money the features included in this receiver are hard to beat. IMHO" that sure sounds like preaching to me!!

Oh look now you're comparing this to the RZ-70 & to the 3800 LOL!

The 3800 just popped up for $900 so for $150 you get benefits that are "excluded" on this:

Two very good room corrections, one is included that includes sub/bass integration.
All channels are assignable.
4 independent sub outs(vs 2 mono)
Independent crossovers.
Internal amps that can be turned off, reducing throttling.
Will get the option of Dirac's DLBC!
BTW the 3800 uses the same DAC as the 4800 and even the 6700.

If you notice most of those benefits on the 3800 were added to the RZ70(and 805)!

Why is this "useless information" again?

All this arguing doesn't help me understand the differences between this receiver and the Pioneer Elite vsx-42 receiver.

I agree, here is a feature comparison that should.

If you are interested in VERY specific technical ratings for this:
https://www.audiosciencereview.co...iew.40731/
Its performance is horrendous. It puts out 20 watts after 30 seconds of load. It throttles itself on a timer..not on heat.

From the site:
This is a total fail in my book. An amplifier rated for 120 watts should be able to produce that dynamically without pulling back by a factor of 5. To have a timer of sort to reduce power is just wrong, especially since no notice is given to the customer either in the unit, or sales material.

Conclusions
The VSX-LX505 produces average performance in DAC department for an AVR. But fails on multiple fronts in amplification. No way should an AVR amplifier have any kind of timer to reduce power. This is the third Pioneer AVR I have tested to do this and is totally unacceptable. I can see this helping them with power dissipation and unit reliability but it better be told to the potential customers. FYI when my own Pioneer AVR did this, I sent a link to the review to the support line of the company and did not receive any response. So I am not hopeful that they care either.

The VSX-42 is from 2012 so it is over 10 years old.

VSX-42 is only 7 channels. LX505 is 9 channels and can be expanded to 11 channels.
VSX-42 Doesn't not do 4K
VSX-42 Does not do 4K 120Hz for gaming devices
VSX-42 has HDMI 1.4, new Pioneer has HDMI 2.1
VSX-42 does not have preouts. LX 505 has full set of preouts
VSX-42 cannot do Atmos as it wasn't available in 2012.
VSX-42 doesn't offer Dirac

It isn't really comparable at all because it is so much older.

If you still have an older TV (non 4K), watch DVD or Blu Ray and only 1080p streaming and 5.1 or 7.1 keep the VSX-42.
