I know there are a lot of fans of the Lx-505, the Onkyo, and the similar integra models. After months trying when they were all released I managed to get the Pioneer. I was replacing an x4100 Denon in a 5.1.4 setup. I built the room for high quality sound and to spec with Atmos, DTS-X, and Auro 3D.

I even bought the higher end tuning mic for Dirac and the special mic stand. I got deep into all of the tuning curves, laptop software, and all that jazz well before actually getting the receiver. For months I combed AV forums to get tips and expert advice.

In the end, in spite of days of tuning and tweaks, I returned the Pioneer. The Pioneer's sound was just flat compared to my older Denon. The 3 dimensions of sound were just 2D and too crisp. I thought for sure I got a defective Pioneer and after returning it, continued searching obsessively for any one of these three extremely similar models.

I was on the Crutchfield waitlist for a few months and finally got the Onkyo. I hooked it up. Did all the initial, standard calibration but got the exact same result. I did the curves and tweaked and tweaked. Things changed but never got close to my older Denon. Just flat sound that made me sad. I ended up returning the Onkyo too. It killed my soul.

So now I have the Denon x4700. It sounds amazing like my x4100 but a little better. The new Denon has some features my old Denon did not and that were critical at my house - having volume control on-screen and being able to turn everything on and off with a simple remote.

I'm not arguing with all the people who love these receivers. On paper they look awesome. My experience was less than awesome, but what pleases people's ears is ultimately a very personal experience and wanted to share mine.

That being said. This Pioneer is still a quality receiver and at this price definitely a slick deal. But I'll warn you not to invest as much time as I did trying to tweak it if you aren't impressed after your first calibration. Tweaking helped but in my case did not work out.

Hard to imagine a 30 year AV hobbyist that never tried using external amps with an AVR.

The receiver itself is 3yr warranty via pioneer plus 2yr additional via third party. I bought the same deal at $625.
By 2-year... yeah, that's what I was referring to -- an extended warranty.

I thought I saw it on here for $699. $649 and/or $625 is killer. Pissed that I missed it.

Pulled the trigger. About time to replace my 14 year old Yamaha and add me some Atmos. Hoping my Klipsch RP setup benefits from this.

I'd avoid nad. They seem to fail a lot. I'll never forget the experience I had with an nad cd player. First time I listened to a disc and went to eject it, the door literally flew open at maximum speed and tossed the cd across the room. Lol. Maybe it didn't like my taste in music? Lol. Got a replacement and not too long after the display died.
I do like their amps, but again, they will likely break sooner than other brands in my experience.
do you like Rotel?

Thanks, OP. I was waiting for this deal to pop up again. I almost pulled the trigger on the LX305 until I realized I wouldn't be able to push the 7.2.4 setup I'm looking to achieve.

Edit: what's a good amp to pair with this to achieve the 7.2.4?

Or if you want a 5 channel for $65 more:

Great bang for the buck.

I've had this receiver since launch and love it. I recently went with a Buckeye Amps 3 channel for my LCR. I'm still only running 5.2.4, but it sounds awesome. So much power all around now. https://www.buckeyeamp.com/shop/a.../3_channel
Those buckeye amps are overpriced. Just get a crown xls if you want excellent class d that would please an audiophile. They actually come in a plug-and-play case and have digital EQ.

Only rotel I had was a preamp years ago. It had a channel imbalance. You could correct it with the balance knob, but I returned it anyway. Didn't even bother trying a second one. Along with several other issues from smaller hifi brands vs the bigger brand names, I learned a lot of smaller audio brands simply aren't as reliable…even when brand new.

Really want to pull the trigger but every time I read about the power throttling and global crossover, I chicken out. I have a 7.2.4 set up with emotiva airmotiv speakers and I am pretty sure they are 4 ohms. Not sure if this will work....
I pulled the trigger and ended up returning it because of the power throttling I read about… that's just unacceptable imo.

Yes. And you should. It's apples and oranges. Audyssey xt32 is the equivalent to Dirac. You'd have to get the X3xxx series to get that level of Audyssey.
DIRAC is better than XT32.

Has anyone confirmed the 20 watts LX505 shut down? My ancient 23TXH is moderately warm pushing 120 watts x 2 into 4 ohms with 8 ohms impedance setting. Having the TXH certification can provide an extra layer of protection when it comes to power output labeling.

If the LX505 can't output more than 20 WPC x 2 continuous, then it is in violation of the FTC stereo power spec. There is ground for legal action.

all you need! I use this it works perfectly. 👍
there's a bunch of these mini class d amps, you want one with tone controls
these are super powerful but you don't need crazy watts cause it's just for your rear height channels. more importantly these are super clean and with the tone control you can make sure your front and rear heights match.

This is a steal at 649, I was able to get them to price adjust my purchase to 749. Past 30 days they won't. AVR is great; if you are in the market for one, this is a beast.

Just upgraded from a Denon S960H that is going back to Costco. So far so good. Dirac was easy to set up and I'm already noticing improvement from super basic Audyssey. Sound profile also seems a little better - with Denon I found myself struggling to understand dialogue even with dialogue enhancer at max, and I was worried it was my Center channel. Just watched first episode of Band of Brothers to test the receiver and dialogue quality is night and day better.

Thanks, Charley! I've seen these and always wondered if they can "get the job done." I'm not an audiophile and, while I'm extremely grateful to the other suggestions here by others, I'm hard pressed to buy an amp that is either more expensive or close to the cost of the receiver itself. All to power a few auxiliary speakers for effect.

It wouldn't hurt to try this and see the results. If it doesn't work out, it's not much of a loss!

I have owned this great receiver for about 2.5 years and like it a lot. I use this in a 6.2.2 (ghost center) dedicated HT room setup with the front 2 channels being pre-outted to a pair of 400W monoblock amps that drive my Magneplanar speakers. Friends bring their friends to check out the Sight (77 G3) and Sound.

Enjoy this receiver.
