Great machine, as long as you get one with reasonable backlight bleed. Backlight bleed is largely caused by the thin bezels, and the pressure from the machine's bezel pressure; a lot of these units (not all - I've seen a good one first hand) have bright areas that are even visible in a well-lit room when displaying black, at 50% brightness - example: watching a video.

I'd take this over the 2024 model that should be available in 6-months. OLED would be nice to get around their persistent backlight problems, but productivity-use still burns in rapidly on the latest OLED monitor displays, and of course the 2024 model has non-upgradable RAM (16GB is the base size for 2024, and may be all that Best Buy will get you for these sales), and goes from a magnesium-aluminum alloy chassis to plain aluminum. They also needed a third fan to help the limited cooling potential in the 2024 model.

IMO, this is the machine to get in a 14-inch today. Especially with G-Helper installed to kill off Armory crate, greatly dropping the idle power usage of the machine, and providing additional "undervolting." 5GHz all-core under CPU load is possible on this G14, at 78W CPU power draw. Of course this tapers off as TDP is pulled with the GPU loaded.

Are all of the screws supposed to come out of the bottom panel (my g14 does). I thought there is 1 screw that isn't supposed to come out??

Tempted to return the open box Legion 5 I got for $780~ and get this for like $90 more, but being open box not sure if Asus will honor remaining warranty. Some of the Asus comments are scaring me.

Love the Legion 5, but mainly use it with my 34" 165hz monitor, but it won't display anything on it or the laptop itself it the monitor is connected to it while I turn it on. If I unplug it and then connect the monitor after is turned on it works fine, but is annoying having to do this every time. And is not my monitor, I've tried other monitors and even a projector and does the same thing either using hdmi or usb c to display port.
Got mine today and has 11 months left of warranty. So I'm pretty sure most if not all have the same amount.

How's the OS reload on this? Are all the proprietary drivers available from Asus?
I should have mine by Thursday. I'll update this post with first impressions/info.

Edit - To answer my own question, it looks like all the drivers are readily available - https://rog.asus.com/us/laptops/r...14%20(2023)

(note that you have to select the BIOS version and OS. I just picked the first line items)
When I turned mine in it gave me an error battery charging issue, and kept doing it after every restart. Had to google it and all I had to do was is update BIOS and GONE! It fixed it

I have an A15 Tuf 4050 from Asus on the way for $980 including taxes.

Tempted to pull the trigger on this instead but the white would be difficult with my dog. Have a feeling it would be covered in black lab hair
I initially bought a 15" TUF 4070 and returned it for this one and don't regret it. Newer CPU, More portable, and like the White casing. It just says premium to me.

My open box Excellent unit has a weird crunchy/sticking sound when using the trackpad (even just lightly swiping) so I'm going to swap it for a new unit. I guess having a real warranty is worth the extra $180 or so.

It's more than that, because tax on 1049 and 829 is different. All you have to do is return to Bb and see if they'll swap it...

Google "ASUS laptop warranty reddit" and see if you still value that warranty… seems like their RMA experience is not the best.

It'll run at the same speed as the onboard ram, so just about anything will do. Crucial is usually a good choice.

Why does it say 16gb ram when it's actually 8gb?

Asus does not honor the warranty on open box, even if shown online.
They ask for a purchase receipt and then deny...unfortunately.
