I spray about 1/3 bottle of hydrogen peroxid($1 at most places) at the inside fins to clean any mold or bacteria issues. Frequency depends on how humid your environment is, but I do it once a month in Dallas, Texas during the months I use them. Dilute with water if you don't need it that strong.

I haven't had any mold issues with mine either. You just want to make sure and set the support bars so the unit is sloped just a degree or two downwards so that condensed water does in fact gravitate towards the outside, where it can drain. If you really want to, you can drill a hole or two in the bottom of the unit to assist with drainage, but I haven't had the need.

These units are so far superior to older AC technology.....it's an absolute game changer.

What I REALLY wish is that they would discount the units that have heat pump capability. I have two of them as well and would buy one more. It's amazing the amount of heat they can put out per watt, as compared to resistive space heaters.

I've got a 8000 BTU unit that I've been using for two summers and a 12000 BTU that I've had for one summer, and I think they're great. My central AC runs far, far less often, so my electricity bill had been noticeably lower despite the summers getting hotter.
It is predicted to be in the mid to upper 80's already next week down here in south Texas. I hope I don't have to install them already.
Mold? I didn't have any issues with that. On humid days, the AC can pull enough water out of the air that the water pools up in the outside portion of the AC. Some people would drill drain holes in the unit, but I just folded up a paper towel into a strip and tucked it between the fins and the case so it wicks the excess water out of the unit and into a bucket or onto a thirsty plant. Works great.

I just checked. Pretty certain I got a 12k BTU last May for $320 at Costco so this is a good deal. 12k is more than I need though so going to grab the 8k
Also with inflation, I don't expect the price to be that low this year. I just purchased the 12k

I would recommend this one even at a higher price! Bought 3 years ago for $333 and I'm happy since.

I'm in New Jersey and have not had any issues with mold and have not had to drill a drain hole. If you are in a humid climate think twice about this unit as mold will be a problem.

Good prices. The best ive seen on the 12k was the last unit at costco end of season last year for $249.

I have both the 8k and the 12k of the U-Shapes. They work nice. Ive never had mold. All ACs will condense, fill up, and then drip water, humid or not. Lean em backwards to drain outside. Add drains if needed. They are quiet and COLD. Inverter means they startup slow and dont spike current.

Our 12k is in the master BR and allows us to cool that room without cooling the entire house. The 8k was the first one I bought and was in the master BR, and is now used for cooling the tent or trailer at music festivals. The 8k runs on a big LiFePO4 battery on solar. On low it will idle at less than 200W. It doesnt need a hard start or an oversized inverter or generator to get it started.

I have 12k btu from last Costco deal, towards the end of summer felt as if it's not keeping up anymore. I'll double check this yeat.
Just a Heads up, these are MAW__V1QWT (like mine). If you check the Energy Star site, seems like they have new ones MAW__U1QWT that are rated one point more in CEER ratings. Both are still more efficient than usual window ACs we're used to pulling 1000w

I have two of the 12k units, best window units I've ever owned. Super quiet and very powerful. They've saved us from needing to drop $$$ on central air. They're also MUCH easier to install and remove since they come with a support bracket and don't need to be wedged against the window like my old units. Would recommend.

Got it last year. It works great and importantly not noisy. So I can sleep through the night. I wish they had a model with heating too though. Could be used all round the year

OF COURSE the Central AC is going to run less! you introduced up to 20,000 BTU's of cooling capacity - most home Central AC's max out at 5Tons

if yours is
4tons it's 40%
5tons it's 33.3%

These have a CEER of 15 If your Central AC is new(er) then it's not much less efficient than these things.

Only benefit to this is that if you only use the few rooms where these are located then you can maintain the house at a higher temp.

Whole house comfort is MORE important (to me)than the potential $10 savings.

These are great for power failures and or Unit failures.
except these are few hundred bucks and a 5 ton ceer 15 central unit is probably close to 10 grand @ at a 5+% opportunity cash cost if pay cash or much higher interest rate if using a line of credit.

I'd like to see these with more thought out styling , linked up with a cello type thermostat and occupancy sensors would be a great retrofit especially in older homes with low slopes and ceilings.

Problem with central anything these days is they are soon out of date, so any computation has to take into account you're going to leave it there till it croaks.

Any feedback on the smart features? Mainly curious if there's any hiccups with turning it on/off remotely.

i've not had any issues , app seems ok as well as the timed feature i have one in a small outbuilding and run it on auto time from the app during florida summers to reduce humidity.

No mold on my 8k u-shape or my 12k with heater in 3 years. Both left stock, no drilling.

It has a mounting bracket that stays in place even when you move the unit. So more secure than a traditional ac window unit. Ours is installed in a second story window with no issue
