I spray about 1/3 bottle of hydrogen peroxid($1 at most places) at the inside fins to clean any mold or bacteria issues. Frequency depends on how humid your environment is, but I do it once a month in Dallas, Texas during the months I use them. Dilute with water if you don't need it that strong.
I haven't had any mold issues with mine either. You just want to make sure and set the support bars so the unit is sloped just a degree or two downwards so that condensed water does in fact gravitate towards the outside, where it can drain. If you really want to, you can drill a hole or two in the bottom of the unit to assist with drainage, but I haven't had the need.
These units are so far superior to older AC technology.....it's an absolute game changer.
What I REALLY wish is that they would discount the units that have heat pump capability. I have two of them as well and would buy one more. It's amazing the amount of heat they can put out per watt, as compared to resistive space heaters.
I've got a 8000 BTU unit that I've been using for two summers and a 12000 BTU that I've had for one summer, and I think they're great. My central AC runs far, far less often, so my electricity bill had been noticeably lower despite the summers getting hotter.
It is predicted to be in the mid to upper 80's already next week down here in south Texas. I hope I don't have to install them already.
Mold? I didn't have any issues with that. On humid days, the AC can pull enough water out of the air that the water pools up in the outside portion of the AC. Some people would drill drain holes in the unit, but I just folded up a paper towel into a strip and tucked it between the fins and the case so it wicks the excess water out of the unit and into a bucket or onto a thirsty plant. Works great.
That's great. I originally bought the 12k and afraid I oversized too much for a room. I went back and accurately measured my sqft and rather go with the 8k. A 1/4 ton realistically isn't a huge deal but I'm more concerned about the less power usage... and well, cheaper price.
Ive had the 8000 btu model for almost 2 years. Best window unit Ive used. Nice, quite, and easy on the electric bill.
It does have a smell when it switches to just fan so Im gonna have to just pull it out and fully take it apart and fully clean it. Spraying cleaner in it just masks the smell.

Gah, I'm torn. 12K @ $300 from Home Depot new with 1 year warranty or 12K @ $250 from Amazon (via woot) renewed, with 90 day return policy?
I'd probably be installing it around the first week of May, so that would still leave me within the return policy for Amazon, but not guaranteed there would be stock for an exchange if I needed it.
Operation wise, yes these are fine to oversize. However, in practice the compressor and fan are still much louder on the 12k even when its running at lower settings.
I've had an 8k unit for a few years and grabbed a 12k unit for the bedroom last summer when Costco had them on sale. The 12k was oversized for the room, but the price was great so I grabbed it.
I could not stand how much louder the 12k unit was even when running on lower settings. I ended up returning it and getting another 8k.

It did alright last summer from August 18 (when I closed on the house) through the end of the season, but I'm thinking of putting this in the main bedroom upstairs--288sqft and getting the 12K unit for the main floor.
The thing is, the best suited window for these is just above and behind my easy chair that I spend 90% of my time in when I'm in the living room watching TV or lounging. So in practice it's about 18 inches from my head.
I'm totally fine with the noise of the 10K unit. I'm not sure now about the 12K unit. Possible alternative plan would be to get the 8K unit for the bedroom at $225 and keep the 10K unit downstairs. The only thing that bothers me is that 10K unit is just a little under-sized for the space it's cooling. It did well for the end of August, but I'm worried it'd be working a bit too hard.

FWIW I gave up searching for noise level comparisons (any searches always came up with random reddit threads complaining about different sounds) and just bought the $224.99 8,000 BTU version from Amazon for my bedroom. The 2nd floor room is 288sqft but with ceilings that are quite low and slope down to the walls, so the BTUs will be more than enough, and I'll have what is by all accounts the quietest of the quiet models in my bedroom, that I can hopefully run on low. Currently I use a Midea standard compressor AC unit in that room that's 6,000 BTUs and it more than covers that room.
For the main floor, I'll keep using my 10,000 BTU Midea U model. On the hottest of hot days, if it doesn't seem like it's keeping up, I can close off the office door and cut the area it has to cool down to around 450sqft. Last summer from August 18 when I closed on the house, through the end of the season it never seemed to have trouble, so I don't think I truly need to upgrade the BTUs on that unit.
