Intel versions apparently have scalable ram. AMD Ram is soldered. I put several of these into production but AMD seem to have some annoying driver issue both with P14s and P16s gen2. My experience - pass on these. There is a reason they're so cheap. Stick with the P1 Gen5z
A laptop with an rtx 3050 would blow this out of the water. And the 3050 isn't anything to write home about.
This t550 is like 1/3rd as good as the 3050 and for 900$ it's not a good deal
Now if this was 400$ now we are getting somewhere
Thank you as well for the reply. I'm NOT getting this computer thanks to yours, and other's comments. I'm looking at the lenovo that was suggested above. I might still keep looking, as I've "crunched the numbers" on my budget and came up with a total of $1,500 for a gaming laptop. Wondering if I should hold out for a 4070 instead?
Why would anyone get this over the $1,000 rtx 4070 laptop on sale?
Assuming you're talking about the Asus M16, different target market. The M16 targets "prosumers" or someone who wants a productivity laptop with a gaming bent, while this ThinkPad is a workstation laptop meant exclusively for work. It targets corporate and solo professionals doing work that requires workstation GPUs which have drivers specialized for use with AutoCAD and similar.
The T550 is an Open-GL workstation card and won't play Direct-X games as well as a consumer card. It is more designed for 3d Modeling, Picture Editing, and Video Decryption/Encryption. As far as it being better or worse than Intel's integrated video card will depend on your application. If it's a videogame then yes the integrated video card will perform the API calls from Direct-X better than the T550, but for everything else the T550 will be better.
I've had lots of laptops and I'm on my 8th ot 9th thinkpad. For a windows machine, they are by far my favorite. Great build quality, keyboard, and the onsite service is THE BEST. If your laptop is critical for your work, I highly recommend. I am on a P16s gen 1 now AMD. The only annoying issue i've noticed is that the OS stutters sometimes. Not sure if it's windows or the AMD chip. Anyone have any ideas?
So is the T550 GPU meant more for video editing and what not? If it's not for gaming...what is its strengths?
It is a professional card certified for apps like CAD, matlab. Certified means more about stability rather than performance. It is not good for video editing either, for gaming this card is very low end.

at this price point, this is a better gaming laptop:

fyi this was just based on a quick search. i'd go with any rtx 40xx gpu laptops over this, if gaming is of any importance.
