eh, the whole design on this asus is questionable. The steamdeck has the best options/flexibility for controls. With how much I've enjoyed my switch oled vs "original" form, I think I'm going with steamdeck oled.

Be prepared to have to return it if you buy it. I purchased the non-extreme version open box excellent, and the charging port was broken on arrival.

Best buy open box seems to either be brand new or broken.
Damn, if that's what Best Buy considers "excellent", I'd hate to see what someone might get if they risk buying one in "fair" condition.

The Ally literally has to be plugged into a wall to be faster than the Steam Deck.

That's the funny lil bit people like to leave out ๐Ÿ˜‚

"The common wisdom for handheld PC gaming purposes at this point is that the Steam Deck LCD or Steam Deck OLED are your best bet for an entry-level experience. The ROG Ally Z1 Extreme performs quite similarly to these units when on battery, and only gets its big performance wins when plugged into a wallโ€” as seen in one of our benchmarks of the Ally Z1 Extreme vs the Steam Deck below."

Like yeah my PC is also faster than a deck when plugged into a wall
Ally isn't ideal for endurance. If you're spending this much on a handheld with short battery, might as well buy a desktop or gaming laptop.

I bought an SD at launch and prefer battery over raw speed. Who wants to be tethered to an outlet for a handheld??

In defense I've been a handheld gamer since my beloved Atari Lynx, and I rarely play them outside of a house. I plug it in and don't have to stress about battery life, and if you get a good magnetic usb c charging insert, you don't even have to worry about power port damage from tripping on a cord. I love portable because I can play on the couch, in a recliner, in bed, not bother anyone else in the living room, and a nice headset beats even the best stereo system, for 2 channel stereo at least.

Ally fans are a toxic community. Every post for any handheld, ally or not, they all come out of the woodwork and fight to the death anyone who dare disagree with them.

Hey no judgement here, that's a fine way to play games. My post was just to enlighten anyone who may not know about it. Because honestly, I didn't even know about it until recently so I'm sure others aren't aware as well.

Everyone knows/says the Z1 extreme is super fast and capable but everyone leaves out that caveat about having to plug it in to achieve those speeds.

Got one earlier today. Holy smokes the first thing I noticed is the battery is terrible. Gonna try to trim the bloatware off of this tonight and download a few more games. I'm a little concerned with my plane ride now, hopefully they have outlets on the cheap seats ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Don't think my power pack will charge this.

Every time I see deals on handhelds I get interested but after going through the comments, I lose interest and decide to pass. So far, I haven't seen one that compels me to go get it.

I pretty much stopped using my xbox, switch, PS4/5 after getting the ally. It is a pretty awesome portable gaming system.

Usually I would vouch for Best Buy open box, but not the ally. I went through 3 excellent open box, one was DOA, 2nd one was so dirty and yellow, 3rd one huge crack on the screen. I gave up and bought a new one, 100 dollars saved is not worth the effort and I get a full year of warranty

This is very similar to my experience. I got an excellent open box version from Best Buy and was given a random white cardboard box. I opened it and inside was just the ROG which was a bit dirty, with no charger or anything else. I instantly went back to the store for the return and purchased a new one instead. I couldn't believe what "good" condition or below is even like if that's "excellent".
