Of course I liked it better when it was on sale for $48 Smilie but this is the lowest price I've seen on it for a while... it got recommendations and good reviews from various websites back in it's time for being a reliable quality ssd (2.5 form factor) drive although there's been some controversy about the newer versions of it having problems with the firmware..

... on the other hand I've purchased (thinks) .. going off memory maybe two or three of the newer (firmware wise that is) that I've been using for several months now with no problems... I've purchased .. going off memory here I think maybe nine or ten of them of various sizes (from 250 GB to 1 TB, 1 TB more often than not ) and installed them in various desktop and laptops and have not had problems with any of them.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078211KBB

if that link doesn't work you can search on amazon by the model number, CT1000MX500SSD1

some reviews from way back when the drive was first introduced I believe

I've had two of these die on me with very little use. They were both from the same batch so could have just been that batch being bad.
PC market is slowing. They had to slow production out of Taiwan b/c they had too many. The price rose because of the slowing of supply but the price is coming down still b/c of demand. People are not buying PC in droves like the were in 2020-2021. PC are considered durable and not a product that gets replaced every 3 years.
Should be $35. PC industry is getting stagnant

I have 2 Samsung 256GB SSDs that have been running 24/7 since 2013 with no problems. I just ordered the 2TB of the Crucial here for $115 - I keep waiting for the price to drop, but it keeps inching up.

Because the 2TB version was $79 just a few months ago.
Yes, that was then, and the low price was due to the market being flooded with overabundant supply. This is now, and manufacturers have cut back on production to stop the prices bottoming out.

A year after purchase, and only 7-8 months of moderate use - sat new in the box for a few.. this drive suddenly started having errors and I lost access to all my data. I managed to recover most of it with recovery tools, thankfully. Maybe I was just unlucky, and this was an isolated incident. My experience with Crucial / Micron products has always been positive in the past.

Unfortunate my friend. Its not impossible but its not common for crucial. Thats why they have warranties and good practice to make backups

The thing that annoys me the most was a few months ago we were seeing tons of deals on solidigm drives for around this price. 2TB ones. And I didn't jump on one and now those drives are well over 100$ and it doesn't seem like anytime soon we will see stuff like that on sale :/

yep i bought three 2TB for $80... no reason to pay for these artificially inflated prices... only the ignorant would pay these prices.

that said, if someone needs storage space RIGHT NOW.. the price doesn't matter(it could be 150$ and if someone needs it now, buy it)... cuz you need it NOW. if ppl don't need it now and they're paying these prices.. they're morons.

also the mx500 models were silently changed.. internals are worse than before. paying more for less and worse internals.

A lot of good information in the posts here or at least in my humble opinion anyways Smilie .. sorry to hear about the crucial drives that have failed in the past Frown (some here have commented on that) ... if you click on the original post link under the "editor's notes" part I had some thoughts on the many crucial MX500 drives I've purchased in the past but I think I forgot to mention my older (250 GB) drives llasted.. going off memory.. I'd say at least 5 years, maybe more, with no problems and ended up replacing them only because nowadays 250 GB is laughably small Stick Out Tongue for storage space (although if you have plenty of space in your PC case and lots of sata slots you could still use older ones to do say Windows image backups or something like that) ...

... what the others have said here about backing up your files is absolutely correct, at the very least save the files on two different hard drives in case one fails ... better yet use online storage backup solutions or if you're cheap like me Stick Out Tongue routinely copy the files onto some external hard drive that you don't always have connected to the PC so you're protected in case say some electrical surge fries your entire PC and the hard drives with it (get a good surge protector! Absolutely worth the investment even if they're expensive .. google "wirecutter" and "best surge protector" for some suggestions)

Great price for a quality SSD with DRAM even if it was the 500GB version. 1TB is a great deal compared to the prices that we've been seeing lately. All the $35 ones just use the cheaper SLC cache.
Virtually all consumer SSDs (including the MX500) use a pSLC cache to speed up writes. The MX500 does have DRAM, which is used to store a copy of the mapping table (FTL). That further increases performance and longevity.

For those of you bashing this one, just know my Samsung EVO died after a year and a half as well. Sometimes I miss IDE Frown
A considerable number of 870 EVOs had an issue that resulted in data corruption and premature failure. I'm curious, what do you miss about IDE?

Quote from bieberwhole69 :

The MX500 has gone through several revisions but whether it's worse is debatable. The NANDBig GrinRAM ratio was originally 1000:1, now it's 512MB for all models (250GB-4TB). This is an upgrade for the 250GB, no change for the 500GB, and a reduction for the 1TB+ models. On the other hand, the controller is a slightly newer revision and the NAND has been upgraded to newer versions at least a couple times. The original MX500 came with 64-layer Micron TLC. That was changed to 96-layer Micron TLC, and eventually 176-layer Micron TLC. This is potentially a significant upgrade. Either way, the MX500 is probably one of the best consumer SATA drives still on the market.

Question, I'm not too knowledgable about these kinds of things, but how are these type of SSD's going down in price (I got this same one for $65 back in Dec of 2022) but then you have SSD's like these going up in price: https://slickdeals.net/f/17339205-2tb-samsung-ssd-990-evo-pcie-5-0-m-2-2280-142-free-shipping?src=category_page

Even external hard drive's are going up in price. I remember last year I bought a 5TB WD HD for around $80, now it's around $115
