A heads up: If you abuse buying discounted phones and activating then immediately canceling AT&T service too often, you will eventually be banned by AT&T from activating service anymore.

Believe it or not, that type of gaming is tracked and no one will be able to fix that for you.

Ex-AT&T employee.

PS: If you don't care, that's fine. But If you do, then you should be aware of this and pick your deals carefully.

The Ultra/256gb unlocked is $421, no need to go thru all the cancellation hassle , better deal imo.

they are dropping 50 every two weeks. I would wait, these phones are not selling like hotcakes. I considered s24 ultra during googlefi launch promo and rolled back because the price is too steep to what it has to offer. I expect the s23 to drop in price till they clear the inventory.
Also s24 have similar att offers through best buy for +$100 to $150

No, after speaking to several agents, and several unlock attempts, I decided to cancel the service and get prepaid for at least 2 months just for that 60 days wait. Agent transferred to Loyalty and very easily cancelled the service and I'm told my service was activated the day I ordered phone from BestBuy website, so technically today is the 4th day and hence I'll have to pay activation. No exceptions could be made (agent pretended to ask supervisor though I could clearly hear no such conversation). + She mentioned I won't be billed for the 3+ days I was active for. My account shows no bill and no payment due yet. Planning to dispute activation fees when I get the bill.

Then I went to prepaid website and bought myself the $50 unlimited (3mbps max - 1.5mbps reduced) and with autopay and taxes, paid $41.XX. Previous 2 agents confirmed via text and chat that Id still be eligible for unlock after 60 with the new prepaid plans as well. Tried speed test and then some youtube videos, seems fine to me for my basic browsing and 480p runs fine, no buffering at all. 720 and 1080p seems to buffer a bit every now and then. Not downloading anything big. For my use case, seems OK. Maybe I'll change my mind after few days or use.
I believe you will still need to pay the plan, usage charges, taxes, and fees for the first month. You will see this amount only after the final statement is generated, which may be in the next 30 days based on which bill cycle your account falls into.
Cancelling your account within 3 days would have waived the activation fee but now that will also be included in your statement.
I am an existing customer and I have repeated this deal in the past, all the time I get billed for the first month for activating the line. The activation fee can be waived after the billing statement generation, the customer care can apply for the credit later and not before.

Dayum! So instant unlock didn't work for you. So there is a 50/50 split for people who are reporting that deal works, but its not working for some

Tried the same tello plan but it won't let me checkout 😅
Hmmm. Did you sign up to port it out on the Tello website before you checked out with Best Buy?

That is very much possible, and on my ATT account payments page, I see the message "This account is canceled. No further payments are needed.". When the bill is generated and if I see activation fees on it, I plan to dispute that (if possible).

This was my first time using AT&T. Since I frequently visit new developments in our growing town, reliable internet access is crucial. While Visible and MetroPCS sometimes lose signal in these areas, AT&T seems to have consistent coverage throughout, even if the 5G speeds aren't as fast. This strong coverage is why I'm considering sticking with AT&T Prepaid.

I wasn't aware it was easy and just $5 to get a new Tello number and port it out. I ported out my USMobile line after having $5 just topped up.

Yes, it might. But I think I mentioned in the wiki how to get an automatic credit for activation fee (if you haven't done that recently) even if its more than 3 days. The cancellation window for the line is 14 days.
I guess try the tello route maybe a better option? Thanks.

Select ship to store option and get with new number while ordering . Your sim is activated during pickup and not after placing order. I'm still running around unlock process
Got it, will look into that as well. Thanks and good luck with the unlock process!

Ok. Went through everything and have a fully unlocked S23 running unlocked firmware now! So big thanks to OP for laying all this out. I'll detail out my experience here in case it helps anyone.

-None of my local best buys had any S23s in stock so I had to do this fully online. I didn't want to mess with porting my number in and then back out, so I folloo OP's advice on using tello. For $5 I immediately had a number I could port with an Esim (came in handy later) and cancel the plan at any time.

-Placed the order with Best Buy using the Tello number. They called the next day and needed my ATT account pin to establish service, which I hadn't setup yet, so it was the last 4 of my SSN. Some weird stuff going on with shipping, as Best Buy sent an automated email saying it was delayed and tracking info was unavailable, but it showed up 2 days after my order.

-The hardest part was getting the new S23 setup and connected to ATT. I don't know if something was up with the SIM card they sent, if things were weird because of porting, or something got setup wrong on my new account. Phone would show bars but no data and calls wouldn't go through. Spent an hour on the phone with customer service getting it straightened out. Seems like they never setup my plan right and the APN profile it was trying to use was all wrong. Eventually got it straightened out, phone still wouldn't send texts, could receive and had data and connected to the network, which was all I needed anyway.

-Sim swapped into my Galaxy S10E (RIP small phone king). Verified the S10 was showing on my ATT account and put through the unlock request for the S23 using IMEI. Made sure to use phone number and email unassociated with the new account. Unlock request went through without an issue.

-Something not mentioned in the instructions: YOU NEED A SIM FROM ANOTHER CARRIER TO GET THE UNLOCK CODE ENTRY BOX TO POP UP. I tried a few different phone dialer codes from Google to no avail. Unfortunately I'm primarily using ATT prepaid, so my SIM didn't work to get the unlock box to pop up. (Interestingly the locked phone worked just fine on ATT prepaid. I didn't extensively test but I had 4G data and bars with the prepaid SIM inserted). What I ended up doing was using the Tello Esim to get the phone to generate the unlock code entry box. Entered the code and was unlocked. So even though the number was already ported out of Tello, the Tello Esim still worked to get the code box to show up.

-Chatted with ATT customer service to request cancellation. Typical "are you sure" run around but they ended up cancelling the line without much hassle. Interestingly, the CS rep said I had a $0 balance. My ATT account online shows a $0 balance as well. We'll see what the final bill looks like but it appears I won't have to do any run around to get charges reversed or anything.

-Followed the odin instructions as well as used frija to get unlocked firmware. Frija downloaded much faster than the link in the instructions. Use xaa for the csc code. Was able to flash the new stock unlocked firmware. One of the files takes a while to load into Odin, so don't fret if you're waiting on it for a few minutes. It's 10 GB of data after all.

$300 unlocked S23 is super slick for me. Big thanks for finding and posting this deal!
can you please post the frija link? my current download it taking about 10 hours+

No luck, I have updated the new line IMEI to S10 with customer care help, and now both the profile page and overview page show the new line on S10.
Tried unlocking as non-att customer and got the message "The device you want to unlock is active on another AT&T account. The account owner needs to remove the device from their account first. For assistance, call 800.331.0500." The device seems locked in my account for the next 60 days.
I initiated the cancellation for the new line with a future date 2 days ahead of my current bill cycle date as I will get charged for the whole month regardless of the cancellation date.

Cancelling with 14 days should charge you only the days you use the service. I mentioned the ATT policy in the wiki. The phone seems to be locked to the new account. You might just have to wait 60 days as per ATT but I don't have anybody confirmed that it works even if cancel the account.

Is the ultra out of stock?

Just ordered one today in store at mobile department. Got a new line and everything looked good, got the $549 deal. Later tonight, got a cancellation email saying delayed item was cancelled because they don't have anymore.

Yet on the website and in store inventory, it shows they still have them?

Never did this ATT trick before, so I don't have history doing this.

I ordered online and provided Google voice number to port in.
Bestbuy.com never asked for PIN to port although it asked phone and account number .
When does it happen ?

Thanks

It does not but based on my conversation with multiple AT&T drones it appears you are able to unlock 60 days after the initial activation even if you have no active service.
