I would be shocked if we don't see a refresh of this handheld within the next 3-6 months.

Even just the SD Card slot furnace issue would be enough to warrant one.

That said - this is easily my #2 pick behind the Steam Deck OLED. Excellent hardware - but highly compromised by the SD card failures and (relatively) small battery.

Steam Deck OLED is certainly the better handheld (in my opinion) - as it does more of the "handheld" things better than the windows devices I own. (Standby/resume - auto-updating games - no drivers/funny business - excellent controls/hardware - great battery life - "verified" games in the store)

Be prepared to be shocked.

These manufacturers treat them as gaming consoles instead of gaming PCs, meaning that they want to set a performance target for a generation of devices, which is longer than laptop's one year cycle. Just like Valve debunked the possibility of Steam Deck 2 any time soon, I doubt ASUS or Lenovo will release anything for marginally better performance. They are going to release a next gen device if the device brings something new.
Perhaps you're right, but I would say it's foolish to assume Asus and Lenovo will take a similar tack to Valve's strategy with the Deck. When have Asus or Lenovo ever shied away from releasing devices with similar performance, or even nearly identical SKUs, year after year? And in the case of the ROG Ally, I can definitely see them releasing even a modest upgrade simply to get a PR reset and distance themselves from the debacle of the melting SD cards.

Valve is a software company that has made a really great piece of hardware, and they're content to stand on that and iterate on the software side until the tech markedly improves. Asus and Lenovo couldn't be more different.

That's because you're playing on turbo (30 watts). You get 80% of max performance running at 15 watts, which runs much cooler and will provide roughly twice the battery life also, should you disconnect from power.
Or, better yet, use 25w mode while connected to power to get 95% of the 30w performance (or better) with significantly less heat.

I got the $300 Z1 non-extreme version and it's been great. Plays GamePass games very well. Diablo IV is smooth with just a stutter here and there. I don't think I would get $186 more value out of the Z1 extreme.
Likewise I've actually been really enjoying the non-extreme I picked up on the deal last week (got my open box for $240). Anything I've thrown at it runs well (atleast 40-50 fps 720-900p) with a custom 20w profile. But if you must have one now I'd say this open box for around $480 this is not a bad deal.

I got Windows installed on my non OLED deck too but wished I had the higher refresh rate.
The Ally isn't just higher refresh. The magic is in the variable refresh rate (VRR) screen, which neither Steam Deck nor Legion Go has. On the Ally, everything looks buttery smooth all the time because there is zero tearing or stuttering. You don't even notice framerate dips unless you have a framearate overlay on. It just always looks smooth.

legion go is gonna be the best choice bc it's got the trackpad and the detachable controllers allow hacking the joycons to make some specialized homebrew controllers, or for alternate controller types to be made by lenovo or 3rd parties.

I bought an open box unit from Bestbuy about a month ago. it was $479.99 before taxes. I bought online and opted to pick up at the store.

YMMV, mine came with the original box, the main console and the charger, that's it. The other accessories are missing. It also came with a 1Tb microSD card and a screen protector. I believe these are added on by the original owner.

I spoke to the sales person about their return policy for open box units, it comes with a 14 day return window for free.

There are other services that they wanted me to get extended warranty and their Bestbuy credit card.

Stay strong and opt out!

Apart from all of this, my unit looked brand new.

When going through the setup, I got a warning that my console was already registered to someone else (probably the original owner). I had to chat with customer support to transfer the registration to me. It took about 2 days. You need to do this incase you need to claim warranty or do an RMA in the future.

I've been using my ROG ally Z1 extreme regularly, I also have a steam deck OLED. Certain games don't perform well on the steam deck but work great on the rog ally. IMO, they both complement each other.

I bought and installed an NVME 2280 adapter ($15) and then installed a 4Tb nvme ssd. storage is now a non-issue.

I hope this helps anyone decide.

Every week a new lower price for this thing. My favorite part in these threads is always the legion of Ally owners trying to convince people that it's normal and ok to pay $500 and have to immediately install a new internal SSD to make it usable otherwise your console might melt.

Still a bit expensive imo. My local Best Buy outlet store has close to 100 of these open-box units in-stock.

I think that person was talking about the non-Z1 Extreme Rog Ally. I play CoD on this extreme version, and it has improved significantly with the Asus updates over time. I doubt Diablo IV will stutter if the CoD plays nicely. Pair this with some AR glasses like Xreal Air, and you have a very nice setup for on-the-go.

Same if only for the battery life. I don't need the power. A game is a game.

How is BB's "fair" condition. They have it local pick up at $455.99
I bought a laptop open box fair from BB right about a year ago...seemed brand new. It wasn't missing anything. To this day, I've had no issues whatsoever.

Remembered I had a $100 GC from Bestbuy, so the net for if I sell my OG steamdeck is not that much. Ordered an open box excellent round the corner from me.

I will bite at under $400, very tempted, but I want a Legion Go more I think.
I was in your shoes and went with the Go. Zero regrets.
