23 and me is a BAD VENDOR. Profit driven, using your data in stuff they sell to others that is supposed to be anonymized but wasn't or wasn't properly (more than once). They've been hacked by China (most recent one: https://techcrunch.com/2023/12/04...ion-users/), too. Our neighbor down the street has a daughter that worked there from the beginning and has plenty of horror stories. Never do 23 and me.

Never.

I don't believe Ancestry proper has been hacked. Their subsidiary rootsweb was in 2017, but unlike 23 and me, they didn't blame their customers for their system's security failure. I know plenty who have done Ancestry and found blood relatives they didn't know they had. So, and easy recommendation for Ancestry, especially at this price!
Share your genetic and racial info for free in their data records. Your insurance might access them in future to decipher about your health issues down the lane. Dont share your DNA period.
Don't waste your money on this crap. I did mine with 23andme and they asked a ton of survey questions about my origin and the results they provided was exactly what I gave them. It took them 3 mths for providing nothing more than I already know. It is a total scam.

Yeah that's exactly what I was going to say, you better make sure no one in your family did anything criminally before signing up for one of these, cause they gonna find them. So many cold cases solved this way now, but I guess if you're not worried about giving all of your generic info away to greedy large companies seeking your to sell your data, then have at it!
Isn't helping the police solve cold cases a good thing? And wouldn't it be good to catch criminals and have them serve their time? I don't believe Ancestry gives law enforcement DNA data, but just don't commit crimes, and you'll have nothing to worry about.

Is this owned by the Mormons. What do they want with all this info?
No, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints ("Mormons") own a family history website called FamilySearch [familysearch.org] where you can build a family tree and research family history documents. The church doesn't have a DNA product. "Ancestry" is a private company not owned by the church.

The big concern are things like political wrong-think, which abusive governments throughout history have used trumped up "crime" charges to eliminate those that stood in the way of their political agendas.

Also, there are many "crimes" that are justified, but nevertheless an overzealous prosecutor still tries to stick it to people...to get their "stats" up, or because they just "don't like guns" or have racial animus, etc.

There's a very fine line between giving honorable law enforcement the tools they need to do their jobs effectively, and tyranny.

Small non-genetics example....there's a small town not too far from here that decided to put up traffic cameras, and they've raked in several MILLION $ in "civil enforcement action" fines, targeting out-of-towners passing through that go a few mph over the speed limit, don't come to a complete stop on a right-on-red, etc. Has it reduced speeding or rolling through right on red at all? Not one bit. Do they care? Not one bit, they just want the free $. If the intent was to get people to slow down, come to a complete stop, etc., they would put up signs everywhere, and use real cops where feasible, because those techniques actually WORK. But, they don't bring in $$$.

Any Desi Indian did this? I think for Indian people it'll just say "Indian"

You can see the latest regions list here: https://www.ancestry.com/c/dna/an...ate-update

Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but I'm seeing "Northern India" and "Southern India" under "Asia," and Southern India has 3 more granular Communities under it.

Not a slick deal. A waste of money. If you're going to have DNA tested, use the Cadillac of all DNA sites: Family Tree DNA.

Might be counter-productive if you have blood relatives you don't know about. I feel better about Ancestry's privacy practices than anyone else in this segment.
That's exactly what happened to my sister and I. We found a skeleton in the closet we had no idea about. (btw, my comment has nothing to do with using different names, just about blood relatives you don't know about)
