About this Game:

they really should have upped the RPG elements here, subquests are useless because rewards are terrible, skill progression is useless because you can undo and redo at any time, items are useless because you only control one person, equipment is useless because it's the most boring linear path. It's a shame because the story is really good, and I love that you watch it straight through or dive in deep with the lore as it's happening. But the game definitely some non-linearity, this is just FF XIII all over again.

Buddy, I got bad news for you. If you felt Remake part 1 was too "drawn out", just save yourself the trouble of getting Rebirth. It is longer and has far more content than Remake in every way.

The reason it's so action based is because the battle system director for FFXVI is literally the guy who made and refined another popular action game, devil may cry 5. There's a few articles about it, it's pretty interesting.
But I agreed, this is another pretty meh mainline ff. Don't know why they went this route when they gave a perfectly fine battle system already which is the one made for the FF7 remake
