Online chat support was a little unskilled and provided about an hour of back and forth nonsense of having me try things which clearly were not going to work, but I entertained them anyway. After a while I got a little bit more forceful (in explaining how this is supposed to work and not an issue with my device), and they told me they would escalate it to get resolved.
Within the next 24 hours they did get it set up, and also then successfully set it up on my other line with them within another 24 hours.
So, VMM does work - and I'm not sure why they had such an issue setting it up...seems like something they should have down pat even if they are a newer MVNO.
Anyway, with this resolved I don't have many more complaints. I have pretty bad reception where I am vacationing now in NY, despite VZW being huge here I actually get better TMO coverage in the area I am at, but I can't blame IM for this.
My only other minor gripe is I have a rooted phone and am usually able to get hotspot working on my normal data plan with other carriers, but it seems VZW/MVNOs are doing some more blocking now and it doesn't seem possible to get it without paying the extra $5/month. PDANet app works pretty well for this - I'm not a big hotspot user, but like to have the option if I really need to get on with my laptop somewhere there is no WiFi.
At this point, I can't believe I'm going to regret paying $40/line for 6 months of service. Whether or not I will decide to stick with them after will possibly depend on their continuing pricing or other deals at the time.
