I'd be interested to try the Mx version of Linux on one of these. I already have an Intel mini running Mint that runs great.

Doesn't seem like a good price when the M4 with 16GB RAM in the base model is coming out in October.

After years Apple finally is acknowledging that 8GB of RAM renders a computer useless for most people.
8GB is perfectly fine in Apple Silicon devices for most people. I have an M1 with a dozens apps running and 30+ Chrome tabs and never experience any noticeable slowness.

Safe to say this could be a good option for a dedicated Plex server? Or is this still not a great value and better can be had elsewhere?
It's a good dedicated box for stuff. I have a synology nas and I'm keeping an eye on a Mac mini deal to run alongside it. It's low power and high performance. Will run plex easily but also you can stack jdownloaded and all the -arrs and a dedicated AI transcription website and anything else you need

Thanks! Is the dedicated transcription service for subtitles? My son is getting to that age where we can sit and watch Dragon Ball Kai, and the subtitles I have are geared towards the Japanese voices and don't sync up with the English voices

Oh no I mean I have a separate tool I currently run on my m1 MacBook Pro that lets me take audio and it dumps them into text files using a local AI model. It's more general use stuff for me to take notes from meetings etc. sorry - not media related. My point is more a dedicated Mac mini sitting somewhere in your house with a Remote Desktop setup (googles is easy and really good) is super useful for more than plex.

Stop spreading this ill-informed statement.
Sure, if 'most people' are actually developers who are utilizing the beta Xcode 16's Predictive Code Completion, then that statement is true. If you have no idea what Xcode 16 means or is related to, then it's fine.
Just like every computer, some day there may be limitations for 'most people' when some advanced apps are written, but this is the same for every perturbation of computer. Did every mac become 'useless for most people' when the M1 was released?

This is a good starting model for anyone who needs a basic computer.

Much appreciated, currently running an Nvidia Shield as my Plex Server, with Nvidia Shields around the house as our main smart TV devices. While the Shield as Plex Server works perfectly fine, I casually keep an eye out on these deals because why not.

Since only my wife is running Apple, then sticking to the ecosystem doesn't have the same value and not worth the premium. Thanks for the context here!
Stick with what you have if it works...if it doesn't, then you can build/buy a much more capable machine with more storage using an Intel 10th gen or higher with quick sync transcoding.

Maybe not the best value for just a Plex server, but these M1 and M2 chips are powerful and crazy efficient. I run servers on mine and use it as a desktop computer. It takes single digit Watts of power on average. Just know that you're not getting a lot of RAM.

Costco cleared their m1 Mac minis out at $299.
And if there is a redesign they should be let go for even cheaper.
And the comments about 8gb ram are valid as it's just complete garbage that Apple tries to charge what they do for ram. They have low market share for a reason.

A bad time to buy a Mini

Major redesign (very rare for Mini) and internals upgrade about to release
I happen to like the current design. The new one is supposed to be the size of the Apple TV and of course with the shrinking of size will come a reduction in port options. So unless you have a specific need, the current option at certainly a lower price will work for many people.

256GB shouldn't be a "thing" for any computer styled a desktop. Apple up to their usual price-gouging tricks.
