After years Apple finally is acknowledging that 8GB of RAM renders a computer useless for most people.
M1 and above desktop/laptop)
So it's A17 pro iPhone processor (8gb ram)

Once you start approaching $500 you may as well build your own with parts on sale.
I plan to build my own server eventually and relegate the M1 mini to web surfing for my parents.
It's a nice little box to learn linux, but I can't imagine paying more than what I did.

The problem with this argument is then why buy an M2 Mac mini at all?
Apple fanbois stay online telling us how "powerful" these machines are, and then in the next breath tell us no one needs 16 GB of RAM.
I got the M1 8GB new for $379.99 a couple of months ago. Paying $90 more for an M2 in 2024 for basic web surfing makes no sense.
Frankly I would prefer more memory and storage space than an upgraded processor. It is criminal that they don't sell these with at least 1 TB of storage AND an option to add an m.2 NVME.
But we all know why they don't. I don't care if it is MSFT or Apple. You have to call out corporate greed and the "goners" that shill for them online.

Mom's a photo bug with tens of thousands of photos all synced up. She has 200GB iCloud, 8/256 M2 mini, and she'll never need more; the only upgrade path she'll use is when Apple drops support for this in 2029 or so and Photos becomes out of date. When that happens, she'll replace the machine, log in with her Apple ID, and be up and running in minutes, no need to copy or redo any setting at all (for Photos etc; gmail etc. will need some time).
Why should she spend for something she doesn't need? The CPU is very fast for what she does (web is fast compared to even a modern i7 per Speedometer 2.0), machine is a pleasure to use, and integrated perfectly with her iPhone (camera) and Apple Messages. She doesn't care about how fast she can concurrently open Photos, Chrome, Safari, Final Cut Pro, MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, Apple Mail, and play Stray via Steam in a window. She'll never do that.
The current $399 special (after GC considered) until 9/30 is unbeatable for the M2 mini and that's exactly the deal she got.
This replaced a Dell i7-12700 from Costco, which cost $800 or so and did include 16GB. Ask her if she cared.... her workflow is quite a bit easier, Photos syncs automatically, Messages all appear, she can call on her home computer now (and it's fully supported), and more.

Since only my wife is running Apple, then sticking to the ecosystem doesn't have the same value and not worth the premium. Thanks for the context here!
Also, do I need to be Linux command line saavy to configure plex on nvidia?
Many Thanks
