Yep. Anecdotally, I'm in this thread because one of my 3 WD red just died (instead of graceful smart death, threw a bunch of bad sector errors and hung my nas). Need a replacement

My seagate exos pulls from external 14TB drives (3-years ago) are still going. So, I've had better luck with Seagates.

Won't open them until Black Friday

Any hdd can go out. But seagates have been complete trash in my experience. Nothing against them, it's just the truth. I am going to look hard for a wd deal first.

I can't speak for Seagates but the (helium) drives in WD externals seem to be tuned to be quieter than the enterprise class Ultrastars of similar design. However, this comes with a roughly 20% decrease in performance (both access time and sustained transfer rate).

All STKP14000400 model drives I've shucked had Exos 2x inside. Those have good performance potential, but you need to know what you are doing (basically it's two independent drives in one case, so you'll need to raid 0 them to get the best performance. QNAP will do that for you, not sure about other NASes. But if your favorite NAS brand doesn't know how to work those - it'll just see them as two 7TB drives, so you won't be able to add them to 14TB drives raid array)
On the downside - those run hot and the temperature limit on them is pretty low (recommended 40C, max 70C - for reference WD drives have 65C/70C). So, they'll easily go over 40C unless you have a proper datacenter AC cooling. Whether this is a problem or not - it's up to you.
I would definitely NOT use them as a desktop USB drive in the provided enclosure - the ventilation is horrible and unless your ambient temperature is 10C they'll easily go over max 70C under reasonable use. If you must - shuck them and move to a properly ventilated enclosure (as in - one with a fan, I don't think they can be passively cooled)
