This core 7 155H is a newer version of Intel CPUs (Meteor Lake) is much more power efficient than the older 13XX CPUS (Raptor Lake). The 8840HS sits somewhere between the two.

Unless you are really pushing the limits of your CPU with video editing, running CPU bound games, compiling large programs, running CAD software etc. you will probably not notice any difference in performance amongst the three. They are all very capable CPUs.

Where you will notice the difference is in the battery life of the system, especially if you use AI enhanced apps. The newer intel CPU (155H) has a neural processing unit (NPU) which is a lower power processor that is designed for AI workloads. The CPU knows to offload appropriate tasks to the NPU which uses less power to get them done.

The Intel Ultra 5 125H/8GB LPDDR5/512GB SSD version linked in the original post will probably provide better battery life while not being as powerful a machine. In my mind 8GB RAM is no longer enough and I wouldn't go below 16GB RAM especially in a system where the CPU, iGPU and NPU all share the same RAM.

I will give the caveat that CPU is not the only factor in battery life. Discrete graphics vs integrated graphics play a role, as does the screen type and brightness.

From a review of a similar 14" Zenbook unit (core ultra 7 155H, 32GB Ram, 3K OLED screen):
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asu...236.0.html
Pros:

CPU: Performance on par with Zen4, slightly below Raptor lake.
iGPU: Intel Arg graphics are a big step up from older intel iGPUs, but still not quite at AMD 780M performance due to driver issues.
Excellent battery life, especially when you use the display at half brightness.
Excellent build quality, some smaller keys on keyboard.
Cons:

Fan noise is frequent and can get loud under load.
RAM is not upgradeable.
CPU can only sustain peak performance for short times because of insufficient cooling.
Instead of just reading the price charting tool, try understanding it too. The $550 was for the open box. $699 is the lowest it has been for new.
You're welcome.

SD has a ton of laptop deals available, but almost all of them involve a compromise on some aspect of the machine.

My aim is to help people understand the trade offs for the laptops I think are a good deal so that they can decide if those trade offs are something that they can live with or if they are a deal breaker.

I do. It was released early this year. An almost 1-year unit. Been this price multiple times
This wasn't on sale until March of this year: https://slickdeals.net/f/17411637-asus-zenbook-14-fhd-oled-touch-core-ultra-7-155h-16gb-lpddr5x-1tb-gen4-ssd-win11h-799-99-f-s?attrsrc=Thread%3AExpired%3ATrue&src=SiteSearchV2Algo
So, you count 8 months as a whole year? That's what you said in your first comment and after being called out you changed it to 'almost 1-year unit'.
Like I said, know your facts before you comment.

People should be aware that this is the original Core Ultra...not the recently released Lunar Lake version Core Ultra 2. The battery life appears to be greatly improved on the 2nd gen processors.

Very true.

I have only seen a handful of deals on the Lunar lake CPUs which by all accounts look like a significant step up from this meteor lake CPU. If you're willing to wait for a laptop deal we may see more Lunar Lake deals in the future, but by then there may already be a newer generation of CPU out that looks better than Lunar lake.
If you need a well built laptop with good build quality and excellent battery life, and you're not yet on board with the ARM CPU laptops (Snapdragon/Qualcomm) then this would fit the bill.

I bought the vivobook s14 with Ultra 5 series 2 for $650 on a previous deal from bestbuy. Is this any better?

I believe Zenbook is the higher tier model over Vivobook. And this one has an Ultra 7 vs. the Ultra 5. Worth $50 more? Probably, if all other specs are comparable.

That's a good point.

I wish that the price charting tool made that more clear.

Copilot+ is a MS hardware requirement designation:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-...98c3037364
  • Processor A compatible processor or System on a Chip (SoC). This currently includes the Snapdragon® X Plus and the Snapdragon® X Elite. We will update this list periodically as more options become available.
  • RAM 16 gigabytes (BG) DDR5/LPDDR5
  • Storage 256GB SSD/UFS
There are plenty of other CPU/RAM combinations that will work just as well for AI enabled workloads like copilot.

I would not do oled screen with fhd+ resolution. I am not a resolution snob, but oled is a different beast. It just makes text fuzzier unless you go with a higher resolution. Thus I will wait for the Costco deal with 3k screen at the same price.

Any suggestions for the most affordable laptop that supports Thunderbolt? So far this is the lowest priced one I've seen.

I see OLED as a negative for laptops as well, mostly because I don't want wide viewing angles (not like I'm huddling around the laptop with a bunch of other people), and as I understand, OLED is not power efficient compared with LCD.
