It can be activated only as needed, you don't need to pay the plan price month after month continuously.
Seems kinda high to me but maybe it'll come down ……
Key points about Starlink pricing:
Standard plan: $120/month
Roam plan (with limited data): $50/month
Roam plan (unlimited data): $165/month
Mobile Priority plan (with higher priority): Varies depending on data allowance, can be significantly more expensive
The STARLINK MINI never goes on sale (this is not the starlink standard which has gone on sale for $299 before, this is the MINI version). I have never ever seen the MINI on sale.
Combine with Amex deal, making it $425. Or you can combine with the Chase Paypal 5% quarterly thing as well.
Thanks OP!
Side Note: You can very easily make a rugged and portable starlink mini kit with a power bank, and it will all fit inside of an Apache 3800 from Harbor Freight (a little tight), or you can get the Apache 4800 and it will have plenty of room for the foam padding.
Also, due to the lower price from the sale, the Best Buy Product Replacement Plan is $69.99 instead of the higher price. Normally I'm not a fan of these types of things, but for this I highly recommend getting it. Use Amex, which adds 1 yr on top of that, so then you have 5 yrs of coverage even for cables and accessories which come with it. Starlink itself doesn't even offer a comparable plan at any price.

1) . Do you have good cell service at home? A mobile hotspot may be the way to go for internet outages at home. Can keep near the window for best connection. Or does cell service go down during power outages/big storms too in addition to your landline internet?
As far as Starlink Standard vs Starlink Mini....Mini is best for on the go. It's smaller panel, uses less watts, and doesn't require a separate Wifi Router. You can fit the entire Starlink Mini in an APache 3800/4800, including a battery bank for powering it for a bit.
2) What cell service do you have? If you have a MVNO (Mint, MetroPCS, Straight Talk, TracFone, Boost, etc), you are getting deprioritized.
Sounds like
[edit/update] just chatted online and they will credit me the difference.
Added 5% CB if you use paypal as payment for Q4 category bonus for Chase Freedom.
It's not -at all- competition for folks who have access to fiber and cable modems- and not intended to be.
When I had it it was providing 100gb pretty reliably at a house that before that maxed out at 8-10 mb DSL for example.
I've since moved and have google fiber, so I sold the starlink HW to the folks who bought the rural house in question and AFAIK they're still enjoying it.
makes sense... I forget that there are people living out there with crappy internet
Sounds like
The mini maxes out at about 40% the speed of the standard dish so unless you have some specific reason for needing the mini you're better off getting the standard option. The mini also is an all in one unit so the router is built in which is not a good router in either features provided or reliability so again better off with the standard option and just using your own router. You can use your own router with the mini but then you have to deal with bridge mode for the built in router and Starlink updates breaking your set up.
There isn't much of a power draw difference either so not sure why people are concerned there. Idle on the standard is 20w and in use is usually 50w whereas the mini is 40w so not a massive difference for most use cases.
Over all these are extremely junk products I wouldn't suggest using unless you have no better options available. You're better off buying a Gen 1 dish off someone as they are much higher quality and get better speeds. Every iteration since the Gen 1 has been focused on cutting production costs not improving the product.

Edit: guess I should mention it does work internationally assuming you have the correct subscription plan but doesn't work in your example used.
The Mini is designed to be portable. So you can bring it with you and have connection (where permitted) as it also has a built-in router.
The regular Starlink is more of a fixed location solution. The only advantage is pretty much it has much better speeds.
So if you're expecting to move around a disaster area, then get the Mini. It'll help others massively as well.
I'd get the Mini, honestly. Easier setup and just far more useful. The speed is more than fine depending on how many people are using it.
EDIT: It appears that Starlink has made changes that allow different hardware on the Roam package, but still note that Starlink constantly changes their packages and terms. So what's true today may not be tomorrow.

I think it's kind of the other way, that you can't do residential service with mini, but I don't have first hand knowledge
