Incredible deal for one of the best x86 handhelds out now. Yes there is a newer version which significantly improves battery life and only slightly improves performance. This first gen model is still very capable.

Paid $400 for my fair condition last year. I use it more than my console. So far it's handled Howgarts legacy, Ghosts of Tshima, spiderman remaster and miles morales all on high settings. It's indeed capable but make sure an outlet or powerbank is around cause it gives me about 45 mins on battery alone. Power source also enables higher gaming performance.

I have legion go and I see the benefit of having a larger and better screen but your arms get really tired after playing for 30 mins.

It's widely considered that the Switch 2 will be less powerful. Go ahead and Google "is switch 2 more powerful than rog ally"
That might be the case, but games on Switch aren't "emulated" and optimized for the device. It's not too different from the benefit consoles are getting over PC when it comes to performance.

On top of that, Switch 2 is running ARM which is much more power efficient than x86/x64.

That said, Switch 2 doesn't play Steam games, and is in a different eco-system with all the challenges of being in a locked and walled garden.

The Switch 2 is likely going to use the T239 Nvidia chip which is equivalent to a RTX 2050 while the Z1Extreme is equivalent to a 1050Ti/1060 3GB. So the graphical capability will be better than the Z1extreme. Now, I think the Z1extreme on the ROG Ally is probably still a better CPU for instruction compared to the T239. But either way, the T239 will likely be able to pull its own weight well like the Tegra X1, especially with DLSS being available to upscale. Even if DLSS can barely work, it will still be a benefit to reduce power consumption.

It should be noted that this comes with a free month of Game Pass Ultimate (as well as the travel case, which isn't bad). Not only that, but you get 3 months of Game Pass Ultimate with the device itself. You'll notice it when you're first setting it up, as it shows as a freebie for buying the device. You can download Game Pass games directly to the ROG Ally, which will look better than they do when cloud streaming and you'll be able to play them away from WIFI. Some games are huge though (100GB+), so don't get carried away or you'll fill up the 512GB hard drive quickly.

RDR2 runs very well on mine with a selective combination of high, medium and low settings. Asus actually has an official article on how to optimize the game for the Ally: https://rog.asus.com/articles/rog...-settings/

Sorry for the dumb question here, I am planning for an upcoming trip to Japan and want some game entertainment, would I be able to play Cyberpunk via steam on this device offline?

Really want to pull the trigger at this price but the 7inch screen is so tiny for certain games (e.g. WoW, CoD, CS, etc.). If that's not a concern for you, def run and grab one.
I can't imagine being competitive in those games on any handheld. I'd get a laptop for those if you want portability lol.

Highly recommend putting Bazzite (SteamOS) on the Ally. It turns it into an actual handheld console. I have a 2TB SSD dual booting with Windows on 1TB and Bazzite on 512GB with 512GB of shared BTRFS that windows and bazzite can read. I only boot over to windows to run gamepass games really. During boot, you just hit volume up and then you can select SteamOS or Windows, otherwise it defaults to SteamOS. Running Heroic launcher for Epic Games freebies. Its a great handheld now instead of a wonky Windows machine. I am knowledgeable with Windows, but it is just not the answer for a handheld. It was frustrating to use and had issues at times. Bazzite is not perfect, but it is a much better choice for what the Ally is trying to be. Dual booting both is the best of both worlds.

The Ally excels at indie games like Dredge, Dave the Diver, and Hades. Games that can be easily picked up and played for a bit. I have used it for some heavier games and it runs most decently well. Forza Horizon 5 at around 50-70 fps at decent settings. I tried some multiplayer shooters, but i will leave those to the bigger screens and systems.

Complaints for the Ally are battery life and screen size. Battery life is just not great on AAA games and the 40 Wh battery is not enough. The screen needs to be 8" IMO. Get rid of the bezels and drop the 8" 120hz VRR display from the Legion Go S into the same size chassis. The 7" is fine for what it is doing, but a bigger screen would be great.
Intriguing - bought this because I want to play World Of Warcraft on occasion when I am away from home, and for the next few months I am in a hospital setting multiple times a week for my kid for several hours - lately been just doomscrolling and watching mindrot vids... so your thoughts, World of Warcraft on Windows or SteamOS? Apparently looks like it can be run on either or (I already had a spare 2tb M.2 and the adapter was cheap so going to install that and use my laptop battery bank for the extra life... (No plans to play competitively - maybe run some alts with basic question an occasional worldpvp or world questing in pve solo) maybe farm some simple achieves or even transmog farm old content - and this looks like it might fit the bill!

Does the base ROG Ally still have the SD card breakdown issue or has it been fixed in newer batches?
It was never fixed, no matter what some weirdos say otherwise

Expect it to fail eventually

it is not a :better: system..

It is not as portable, the 2k display gets wasted on such a small screen, and UI still has issues
The 2K screen does perfect integral scaling to 800p

Got the non extreme and swapped the back for better air flow and a kickstand. The non extreme is still pretty impressive got it for $355 open box 6months ago. Anything crazy I just steam link it to my pc when I wanna be more portable. These are both way better than the steam deck imo I had it before the ally.
He non extreme is weaker than the STEAM DECK

It will use the same chip so very similar gaming performance
LEGION GO 2 will have the newer chip, the one at CES was an engineering sample

I feel like this is just gimping the Ally. I have so many games on other platforms, and this would just make them harder to access. It's the main reason why my Steamdeck has been collecting dust since I got the ally
Dust off the Steam Deck, you might be surprised how well it works now. I played through Titanfall 2 recently and it was a pleasure (and I don't even play that many games nowadays). Civ 6 is another good one. They continue to add default compatibility settings for more games and it works really well. There are a handful of games that require kernel-level "anti-cheat" code installed that don't work, but that's a really shady mechanism that puts you at risk of malware. Kernel level code can access literally anything and once an exploit is found it's game over for all your data.

Linux is much more power efficient than Windows. That's crucial for a battery powered device. I ran Windows for so many years but it's such a hassle that I've switched completely to Linux on both portable and desktop devices. It's such a breath of fresh air.
