Incredible deal for one of the best x86 handhelds out now. Yes there is a newer version which significantly improves battery life and only slightly improves performance. This first gen model is still very capable.

Paid $400 for my fair condition last year. I use it more than my console. So far it's handled Howgarts legacy, Ghosts of Tshima, spiderman remaster and miles morales all on high settings. It's indeed capable but make sure an outlet or powerbank is around cause it gives me about 45 mins on battery alone. Power source also enables higher gaming performance.

I have legion go and I see the benefit of having a larger and better screen but your arms get really tired after playing for 30 mins.

I feel like this is just gimping the Ally. I have so many games on other platforms, and this would just make them harder to access. It's the main reason why my Steamdeck has been collecting dust since I got the ally
The only platforms that's can't run on STEAMOS are XBOX, EA and Ubisoft, the later 2 having a tiny library

Heroic game launcher adds Epic and GOG games

U can set the Go down and only hold the controllers, no?
but that really restricts how you can really use the machine. Do you want to put it on a coffee table or desk? At that point, get a console or desktop PC. I use my machines in so many different scenarios. On the toilet. In bed. sitting on the ground with it in my lap. etc. etc. And so many of these scenarios aren't good with putting the Go down.

The ROG Ally is the best balance in terms of size versus performance. It's not tiny like my Switches. It's smaller with a much better screen than my Steam Deck. It really is my favorite portable of all of them. Yes, the battery is bad which is why I almost bought the ROG Ally X which has an outstanding battery. I'm waiting for the new ROG Ally with the new AMD APU. But right now, the priority for me is getting the 5090.

Also, I do use my ROG Ally with my Xreal Air 2 Pro glasses. Love the combination. The "problem" with a portable machine is you have the device at a level where it's comfortable for holding the controls. But that means you have to look down to see the screen. But with the glasses, you can be holding the portable on your lap while looking straight ahead for long gaming sessions. And yes, I have preordered the Xreal One Pro glasses.

I can't imagine being competitive in those games on any handheld. I'd get a laptop for those if you want portability lol.
plug in a KBM option. the ROG Ally is basically a laptop.

I pulled the plug on the X and went all out. I am beyond happy with this thing, I sold my desktop and love the downsize. Now I go to the boba shops to play WoW from my phone.

I've had mine for over a year now. If I were questioning this deal as a new buyer, I wouldn't go for it. Don't get me wrong, I used mine a ton and it is sweet. But the battery life is really bad. Like 30-45 minutes before needing to be plugged in. Kinda defeats the purpose of being portable unless you're next to a charger all the time or have a portable battery with you. I won't even bring it on flights because I know it'll be dead by the time we've reached cruising altitude. I've also sent it in for repairs twice, the first time it was stuck in a boot loop and nothing worked to fix it, so ASUS had to reset it. Second time the SD card reader stopped working. I literally got it back today, they replaced the motherboard and told me that should fix it, but it still doesn't work. So it's going back tomorrow lol. I'm really hoping ASUS just decides it's broken and Best Buy gives me full store credit back to buy the Rog Ally X. If these issues don't sound like they'd bother you, it does run games very well and I was choosing it over my console all the time. Just trying to save you a potential head ache.

True but they sound like they want to play on the handheld. the screens too small for those games imo, I have an Ally.

That's a very user dependent situation. I got a windows PC and a steam deck. I have heroic and some emulators, but I keep running Steam games that run smoothly on the SD. The user experience compared to windows is pretty great. plus the desktop environment is serviceable even if you don't know much about Linux.

If you're arguing about AAA games, I just don't play those on a mobile device anyway. The Ally would be overkill in our house.
I mean I've been using windows to game since 1994, so for me Windows is the best setup. However for an extreme casual person that doesnt have loads of games on epic, gog, etc... steamos would be much easier. However getting non steam games running in steamos imo is far harder and shouldn't be tried by the same newbie that needs SteamOS to keep him happy. If you understand what I mean.

Dust off the Steam Deck, you might be surprised how well it works now. I played through Titanfall 2 recently and it was a pleasure (and I don't even play that many games nowadays). Civ 6 is another good one. They continue to add default compatibility settings for more games and it works really well. There are a handful of games that require kernel-level "anti-cheat" code installed that don't work, but that's a really shady mechanism that puts you at risk of malware. Kernel level code can access literally anything and once an exploit is found it's game over for all your data.

Linux is much more power efficient than Windows. That's crucial for a battery powered device. I ran Windows for so many years but it's such a hassle that I've switched completely to Linux on both portable and desktop devices. It's such a breath of fresh air.
Oh for sure, when I had my steamdeck I loved it... except when I wanted to play a more recent game and it struggled. Last one I remember not liking the performance of was Marvel's Midnight Suns which isn't really that advanced.

correct, I just didnt enjoy how much effort it took me to get it running. But honestly it the biggest was the performance differences. SteamDeck SOC just wasnt cutting it for me.

I found Steam games needed a lot of setting customization on the Ally to not be overly or underly sensitive with the controls. Seemed like too much work, so I returned it and got a Steam deck (happy with it). Though I get there are alot of other uses for the Ally

Is it just me or does anyone else see it as a concern that new versions of handhelds are coming out every 2 years or less? If you get it in the first year you're paying 500+ and if wait longer the conversations turns into, "the new own will be here next year."

I have this since the week it was released. Very awesome device. I have OneXplayer, this one and Stem Deck. Performance wise, this is just awesome. And that price is steal.

This handheld will be great only running Linux. Windows nails the battery very hard.
