Well save another $10 from the last sale.
This is sold be 6ave(or electronic club) through Walmart.

If you're budget conscious then look at the 420, same performance minus Dolby Vision support.
Sales on that are hard to come by lately though.

IF you get one that doesn't have the known issues, it can be a good alternative.
Keep in mind you are required to manually turn on/off Dolby Vision as needed.

I've had issues with an ub820 as well. Mine continually had digital artifacts/scrambling then eventually paused all together. This happened when it was new. I had it replaced and it's worked well since.

The cheapest I've seen this player is $319 from bh photo in 2022. Doubt we'll see that price ever again.

or just leave DV on. I have never seen anything that looks bad requiring me to go back to HDR10 on the x700.

Does the 420 have the region B trick? I've been eyeing this one specifically for that. I don't need Dolby vision.

I found one UB820 for $99 at a pawn shop brand new. I found a second at a Goodwill no remote for $10. Both work beautifully. bought an oem remote on amazon for $10.I can't get the Region B trick to work though. Only tried on 2 blu's.

What is the consensus on using a PlayStation 5 as a 4k disc reader? (Please don't shoot me, genuine question)

I know two that do that.

It's a good example on how often DV vs HDR isn't as big a difference as people portray it to be.
Why I only have the 420 in our living room & 820 in the dedicated room.

Consensus is if you play games & ok sacrificing top quality then it may be worth it.

Keep in mind you shouldn't be comparing it to this Panasonic player since the PS5 doesn't support Dolby Vision.
You should compare it to their 420 model.

That's basically what you're manually switching on and off from, in your case not doing.
If you're not having any issues, count your blessings and enjoy.

I have had a couple of the Sony UBP X700s over the past 5-6 years, and both of them have had 4k disc freezing issues with longer movies, usually in the 2 hour 15 min- 2 hour 30 min plus range. So wanted to try the Panasonic 820s. Purchased one at Best Buy - wouldn't read my MI Fallout 4k disc, would not play audio (played video) on my Oppenheimer 4k disc. Updated the firmware and cleaned the discs and same problems. Both discs played fine in my Sony UBP X700, outside of the disc freezing near the end of the movies.Returned first Panasonic 820 player to Best Buy and exchanged for a new, different 820. It reads my MI Fallout 4k disc fine, but has the same problem with my Oppenheimer 4k disc ( ie no audio during video playback).I contacted Panasonic CS and they sent me instructions on how to do a factory reset of the 820, however my player never displayed the correct code on some hidden menu to actually do the reset. I have contacted them again. They also suggested sending the player into one of their service centers. I should not have to send a brand new, $497 (normal price) 4k player to be serviced in the first week of ownership. I was really hoping the Panasonic 820 would solve my problems with the disc freezing issues from the Sony 4k players, but that has not been my experience. Good luck out there!

If you are just looking to play 4Ks, the UB-450 is a much better choice (or UB-150 if you have a TV or projector that doesn't support dolby vision). The 820's only real benefit is upscaling 1080p Blu-rays to older TVs that don't have good internal upscaler chips

the 820 is the "default recommendation" because for years the 450 wasn't available in the US and people just repeat what other people tell them
