Starlink Mini is a portable satellite internet kit that stands out for road trips, remote work, and other places without cell service. It can fit in a backpack or vehicle, delivers roughly 30 to 200 Mbps with mid 20s latency, and has stayed usable through storms. The $5 Standby plan is a major draw for light use, with unlimited slow data for texting, maps, audio calls, music, and low resolution video. Main caveats are that it needs a clear view of the sky, does not work indoors, and some power cables or adapters may need to be bought separately.

  • The $5 per month maintenance mode provides unlimited 0.5 Mbps for basic tasks like texting and navigation.

  • The device can be powered from a power station or vehicle setup, including a 12V adapter approach.

  • Home Depot price adjustments can be handled quickly through customer service when the price drops within the stated window.

  • The Starlink Mini can deliver usable connectivity for road trips and mountainous areas without cell reception.

  • The Starlink Mini requires a clear view of the sky and does not work indoors for backup use.

  • The $160 per month Roam-unlimited plan excludes ocean usage and ocean mode costs $2 per GB when enabled.

  • Standby mode cannot be maintained for more than 12 consecutive months without upgrading or being limited to the account page.

  • Some areas may require a one-time $1000 fee to start a new account, which can block Roam standby plans.

Note that the $160/month "Roam - unlimited" plan does not include usage on oceans. You can enable "ocean mode" with a simple toggle switch, but it's $2/GB when toggled on (regardless of if you are actually on an ocean).

There are esim that works with cruise ships depend on destinations. The one I know worked is gigsky. Check their cruise ship plans. https://www.gigsky.com/data-cruises-cruises-only
GigSky works with Cellular-at-Sea and Red Bull Austria works with Telenor Maritime. These are the only two services and thier exclusive by-the-gig reseller that I'm aware of for cruise ships. Ships are either one or the other. Most US centric cruise lines are Cellular-at-Sea, but there are exceptions, notably Carnival Venezia and Firenze as they were built as Costa ships.

Carrier plans are pretty standard for $20/day with 500MB of high speed data and the 512kb/s.

The other advantage to by-the-gig data eSIMs is you can use hotspots. On my last cruise, my kids could keep their Duolingo streaks and my spouse could check their work email daily off the same $20 7-day 1GB data package.

Just FYI, Starlink has been sending emails to select people for a free mini with standby mode ($5 a month), so wait and see if you get the offer if you're in the US..

just note that the device doesn't work indoors and needs a clear view of the sky in case someone is considering it for home backup use.

You can put it straight on the $5 plan out of the box

I see Best Buy has a limit of 14 days for returns on "activated devices", which I assume mostly applies to phones and similar that activate on cellular networks, but technically Starlink is an activated device. Anyone know if Starlink follows their normal return policy or the abridged activated device policy? The product page doesn't seem to indicate.

Chat agent says 14 day return window, but curious if anyone has additional insight, since chat agents are pretty hit or miss with accurate info.

Had anyone received their unit from a retailer other than Starlink and able to sign up for the $5 plan?

I've read that if you bought directly from Starlink, you can immediately sign up for the $5 plan after ordering.

However, I have not found anything on how to do this if buying from another retailer (in my case, Best Buy). After installing the app, I see an option to "Activate Starlink", but it only shows the the $50+ plans for Roam.

I tried calling / online chat and HD wouldn't do price adjustment, took it to the store and returned it and ordered a new one. Totally forgot you could actually return and rebuy the same unit.
I did online chat and they refunded the difference
