Starlink Mini is a portable satellite internet kit that stands out for road trips, remote work, and other places without cell service. It can fit in a backpack or vehicle, delivers roughly 30 to 200 Mbps with mid 20s latency, and has stayed usable through storms. The $5 Standby plan is a major draw for light use, with unlimited slow data for texting, maps, audio calls, music, and low resolution video. Main caveats are that it needs a clear view of the sky, does not work indoors, and some power cables or adapters may need to be bought separately.

Just FYI, Starlink has been sending emails to select people for a free mini with standby mode ($5 a month), so wait and see if you get the offer if you're in the US..
I'm guessing this free offer is for a "rental" unit that would have to be returned?

Had anyone received their unit from a retailer other than Starlink and able to sign up for the $5 plan?

I've read that if you bought directly from Starlink, you can immediately sign up for the $5 plan after ordering.

However, I have not found anything on how to do this if buying from another retailer (in my case, Best Buy). After installing the app, I see an option to "Activate Starlink", but it only shows the the $50+ plans for Roam.
so can we say you can't activate it with standby plan if you bought the device from a retailer?

That's correct. You have to choose a 50GB or unlimited to start the trial period. I bought it near the end of month from the HD section of the shopmyexchange so after the trial period I was only charged a pro-rated amount of $34. After the trial period ends then the account will activate and your credit card will be charged. (you need to add a payment method before the trial ends for account to activate, it won't prompt you for it.) Then the option to place it on standby for $5 appeared under the change plan and pause plan. If you try to place it on standby or "pause" during trial period then it will just close the account but allows you to restart it.

When it restarts after closing during trial, it will again let you activate only regular account, not standby one?

Also correct. No options to change subscription (including placing it on standby) will appear until you're out of the trial period and you credit card is charged to activate account.

People who got it from Starlink are able to start with standby plan i think. I saw multiple comments on it. Do you think it is true?
Maybe they already have account using the standard home kit and adding mini account on it , who knows

The cheapest way I found so far is to get a portable and battery powered travel router so you pay for 1 wifi and share it with all of you. Sharing only works if you all are in reasonable proximity. Battery powered means you can power the router with a 10000mAh battery and carry it with you for teh day. I put it in my pants pocket. Would have saved you $750.
