I missed the sale last time and picked up a pair of cheaper ones on Amazon, whose lowering feature is "drop up to 300lbs like a sack of potatoes." Scary business. Working in pairs, you can do stepped uncontrolled drops where Jack #2 is set slightly lower than Jack #1, and you release Jack #1 and the weight freefalls until it is caught by Jack #2. But I wouldn't dare do it at any weights close to the limits.
I think the $45 pair of cheap jacks served the intended purpose (lifting furniture to a height that a dolly can be placed underneath) and were worth the money, but having even one of the Irwins will dramatically improve both the safety and the functionality.
