This is an absolute buy. I am surprised the deal is not getting more attention.

Great headphones. I got one two years ago for the same price. I remembered this went cheaper than $99 sometime.

Random snap survey: how would you describe the sound of these Senn HD599?
A) Bright (dynamic, forward, lively, sparkly, etc.)
B) Warm (smooth, lush full mids, gives up a little in treble extension/detail but great for long listening sessions with zero fatigue)
C) Neutral (balanced, borderline "clinical," highly revealing of bad recordings but very rewarding for good ones)
D) Other (expand on, please)

B would be the closest probably. Check this review [wordpress.com] for a lot more detail:

The overall tonal balance is a 'warmish' type of 'neutral'. This makes the HD599 not super 'dynamic' sounding but rather 'mellow'.
...
Subbass is rolled off and bass starts to roll off from 40Hz. Mid bass is elevated by 5dB which gives the bass a bit more 'punch'. Mids are warm as the response is sloping downwards from 200Hz to 2kHz. From 1kHz to 15kHz the response is quite flat. While having warmth the headphone still has enough clarity and presence.
Treble is of good quality and extends beyond 20kHz.

These were one of my first higher end headphone purchases, along with the hifiman 400se and the beyer dt990. Had them hooked up to a monolith liquid spark amp and eq. I sent these back. I recommend the hifiman 400se which can be had for under a hundred refurbished or b-stock direct from hifiman. These sounded muffled compared to the other two headphones. Even with eq I could never get them to sparkle like the 400se. With that said, If I had just the sennheisers and nothing to compare them to, I would have been perfectly happy with them. Also if you plan on not using an amp or eq I would recommend the senns as these sound better out of the box.

Thanks! Ok, after reading the review it seems these are probably similar to my AKG K612 Pro.

A Schitt (the name of the company) stack is a Modi DAC and a Magni amplifier. Originally, they were $99 each, but like everything, the price has gone up. https://www.schiit.com/products/magni-unity

Genuinely thought you were joking until I googled it and slowly pressed enter with one eye closed.

Given your explanation of what "neutral" means to you I may have to say my choice would be option D. I consider the HD 600 as neutral and the HD 650 as warm. To my ears this HD 599 is slightly V shaped. Not neautral or bright but it has a slightly elevated treble that gives a bit more excitement than the 6 series. The bass feels a bit more punchy than those two as well, and by comparison the mids seem a touch recessed while missing some of the naturalness of the 6 series. Saying that I am really glad I finally caved and got the hd599. It seems closest to my HD58X but better for gaming.

I see this goes as low as $85. Is $99 still considered a good deal?

Imo, yes. I guess it depends on how patient you are and how badly you want to buy something. Those sub $100 deals seem to be fate and few between from what I have seen. It's certainly worth the $100 but a cheaper price always feels better. Lol

I've had the 598SE forever, amazing headphones. The headband started to deteriorate and I found a repair kit, good as new.

In what way is it better than 58x for gaming and are there any other tradeoffs? I liked the 58x more than 6xx and 559 and not sure if I should try any other Senns.

Are these worth buying if I already own a pair of HD 650?
