Already got the 5, but this is a really good price, IMO.

Looks like a good deal. However, be aware...
  • It doesn't have any storage so you'll need a good quality uSD card.
  • It doesn't have a mount, so depending on how you intend to use it you'll need one of those.
  • Apparently you are required to use a phone app with it. Some reviews say that the Android version of the app is not in PlayStore and needs to be sideloaded.
  • A common complaint is that it can overheat and stop working, so it may not be suitable for very warm environments. This seems a common complaint for these types of camera.
Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of these.

Totally agree. This would be a great "B Camera" for high-risk applications (shooting range, mounting under your vehicle off-roading, etc).

A few clarifications:
You don't HAVE to use the app, you can control the device from the camera, but the app is well designed and adds a lot of functionality, especially when the camera is mounted someplace hard to reach.
Good note on requiring an SD card, but that was common industry practice till recently. SD storage is cheap and reliable, though integrated memory in newer devices allows for faster startup times (never been an issue for me).
I've used a progression of DJI action cameras for a few generations (currently using the Action 5, Osmo 360, and Pocket 3). They have all functioned perfectly and I've never had any overheating issues, including when the camera was mounted to the outside of a vehicle all day long. Additionally, unlike the GoPros I owned previously, I've never had issues with DJI cameras locking up and having to be hard rebooted by pulling the battery. That happened all the time with my GoPros, which is why I'll never go back.
DJI has built an excellent ecosystem of cameras, drones, mics, etc. The ease of linking a mic to an action camera and it just working perfectly is a huge plus.
The Action 4 isn't the latest and greatest, but it's a solid performer and this is a good price. I'd especially recommend it for someone who needs a cheaper camera they can put into high-risk applications. Also, the latest generation DJI action batteries have longer runtimes (and I think improved cold performance) and are fully compatible with the Action 4.

Last I remember you DO have to use the app. I literally junked this after getting it for this exact reason. If I remember correctly the camera literally has a countdown "you have X more videos you can record" before you have to use the app. If you mean you don't have to use the app AFTER you already setup the camera with the app you are correct but to me they are one in the same. The camera is unusable without SIDELOADING (it is NOT on the play store) some sketchy chinese app onto your phone.

I see multiple reviews stating this, and relatively recently too. Apart from anything else, later this year Google will be making the sideloading of apps more difficult, having first threatened to prevent it altogether.

i thought overheating was mainly an ongoing gopro issue?

I had this and returned it. It is a great camera, good underwater too. You MUST setup through the app. Not sure who is farming the info from the app, but probably the main problem might be DJI being banned altogether from US for security reasons...If/Until then it is great, Amazon likely is cleaning older inventory.
p.p. I returned it because the underwater case side button pinched through the rubber of the camera button. You can use it without a case though, it is water sealed.

Is this better than, say, an iPhone 17 pro max?

If it need the app to do anything with the camera, I'd stay away from it. Some things are just unnecessary
