I went in to check out and maybe buy one of these three or four months ago and finally ascertained that these were former in-store display units. Upon checking the serial number on the one that they had it was determined that it had an in-service date three years prior, so it had been on at least 18hrs/day (probably 24) for well over a thousand days. For me that was a no-go, though I'm sure the panel had a lot of years left in it I just didn't feel like taking the chance.

it's not a gaming monitor, it's a work monitor with great color and TB5.

That's not even remotely in the same class of displays. It's not 4k, let alone 5k.

Community Reviews

The Apple Studio Display is a 27 inch 5K Retina work monitor that shines for Mac and creative use, with bright output, excellent color, strong speakers, and a clean all in one setup with built in webcam, mic, and Thunderbolt power delivery. It is praised for graphic design, videography, film editing, and content creation, where the sharp 5K panel and factory color tuning stand out. The main cautions are its 60Hz limit, no HDR, and a webcam that is widely criticized. Open box Fair units also arrive with missing cables, scratches, or cracks, so condition and remaining warranty deserve close checking.

Thanks for sharing this insight. Yea, it does make the deal not worth it.

These any good to have?
If you're a graphic designer or videographer, yes. Beautiful display that's very bright and has excellent color reproduction. Great speakers for its size.Doesn't support HDR and maxes out at 60Hz refresh rate, so less ideal for movie-watching or gaming. Apple doesn't typically embrace the bleeding edge of technology. Their deliberate and strategic adoption of OLED is probably the latest example of this.

Apple has become utterly stale. 60 hz, LED in 2025? No thanks.
It's literally a production grade monitor for film editing.

There's no scrolling involved in office work? I'm sorry, but for a "premium" display, 120hz is the minimum and Apple has been super late to the superior display of OLED. Jamming cell phone chips into laptops is the utter state of the company right now. But hey, you might get a folding phone this year.. only 7 years after Samsung released theirs.
I have this monitor and a 32inch LG gaming monitor that can switch from 4K/165Hz to HD/330Hz with a press of a button.
This one has far more utility than the 32in monitor for work. It has integrated power adaptor (big plus to keep everything tidy) and supplies power to my work laptop via thunderbolt cable. It has webcam, awesome speaker, and great mic all integrated (for Zoom calls). It packages all these inside one flat panel that can smoothly move up, down, tilt. It makes my workspace clean.
Sure, I scroll, but I don't read documents while scrolling. With your phone, you kind of have to constantly scroll while reading due to the limited space, but not here. It takes 10 seconds - 10 minutes before scrolling to the next page. No need for 120Hz for these.

How did it go? I wonder if there's a way to check how many hours it has been used.

Overpriced for what you get just to pay the "Apple tax."
