The TX NR7100 stands out as a budget friendly way to get Dirac Live, with onboard room correction and 7.2.2 support making it especially appealing at $599. The price is often framed as the cheapest current entry into Dirac, and the sound is described as strong enough to replace older Onkyo, Denon, Integra, and Harman Kardon receivers. The main tradeoffs are its age, lack of pre outs, and parallel sub outs, which limit future expansion. There are also repeated concerns about warm running, power limiting with low impedance speakers, and occasional reliability or recovery issues.

  • Home theater buyers who want Dirac Live on a tight receiver budget, because this model is repeatedly described as the least expensive way to get it.

  • Movie and gaming setups using normal-impedance speakers, because it handles typical listening levels well and the 4-ohm power limiting issue is mainly a concern with low-impedance loads.

  • Owners upgrading from older receivers without eARC or HDMI 2.1, because it adds those connections while keeping familiar 7.2.2-style home theater support.

  • Listeners who care most about room correction in bass-heavy rooms, because Dirac is the main reason people keep choosing this platform and it can improve low-frequency integration.

  • Buyers who need pre-outs for external amplification or future expansion, because this model has no pre-outs and that is its biggest functional limitation.

  • Owners of true 3-4 ohm front speakers who like loud playback, because the receiver can hit power limiting and struggle with low-impedance loads.

  • Shoppers expecting a future-proof platform with newer subwoofer correction features, because it lacks DLBC, D-ART, and independent sub outputs.

  • People who want rock-solid reliability and simple recovery from faults, because some units have required a full power disconnect after audio stopped or protection behavior kicked in.

Searching online finds it in seconds, so not sure what you mean there.

I have a subwoofer; that immediately takes most of the stress out of the system; at that point, a paperweight could drive the wattage required of the remaining speakers.

Most HT folks probably have a sub too, with most traffic under some cutoff (60? 80?) going straight to the sub(s).

My question is, short of someone absolutely POUNDING the living hell out of the speakers at max volume with no sub, who will run across this?

I'm aware of it, so should I run across it (expectation: never) I'll be sure to unplug then replug power.

Amir should also redo his review for the 7100 at the $499 price point. I'd like to see what he thinks is better.
SD doesn't allow direct links to ASR so I had to use a paragraph from Amir's review to assist w/the review search. I suppose Amir's benchmarks may "unfairly" make or break someone's decision to purchase a product. My advice is to just use your head and decide which of Amir's points are valid (limp mode into low ohm speakers) or invalid (the inaudible "low SINAD" on the 3800). Measurements only make sense and have validation if you know what thresholds are acceptable or not!

Also, Amir would never redo a review based on pricing since the technical aspect (which some of us care about) wouldn't change. The value proposition of the AVR is up to everyone's individual situation and can't be objectively measured.

If your speakers are truly 3-4 ohm across a wide range...this unit might be a challenge for you if you like louder listening levels

Personally, Nothing at even double this price point would be recommended by me if your speakers are what you say they are

Check out the Onkyo RZ70..its the least expensive unit I know of that I would pair with those speakers and not have a question in my mind whether there would be an issue

These PAC units didnt do well on ASR testing with 4 ohm loads
I personally owned a Denon X4800 for a while and I would not pair it with 3-4 ohm speakers and listen at loud levels, consistently, either

However, I would have no issue with trying that with my Integra 8.4 and it shares the same amp/power supply as the Onkyo RZ70 I suggested

On another note, speakers that are 3-4 ohm , across a wide range, are typically higher end anyway

What are you using now to power them?
That might be the real litmus test of what could work for you
I'm guessing the setup is not 3-4 ohm speakers, it's three 4-ohm speakers.

Yes 3 of the 4ohm speakers for the front.

BTW the RZ70 is "limp mode free" but doesn't offer ART!?
If I recall you made several silly claims about the RZ50 not being capable of "running" DLBC!
With the RZ70, the DSP is limiting and that's why it can't run ART. I thought you knew that (sometimes I give you too much credit).

Hmmm...... so DSP is ok on the others but not their flagship unit!?

Maybe it's because Dirac is proprietary, Onkyo didn't pay to play with that Unit(like the RZ50 & DLBC)!?
If I recall that was one of the claims you said about the RZ50 & DLBC, you used a few!

Let me guess, you read/heard this from the "experts" over on AVS again.

You could just enlighten us with proof that is why?
Imo it would be more "definitive" if it came from Dirac and or Onkyo & not YOUR experts!

DSP and limp mode are limiting the others. For the RZ70, it's only DSP. Like I said, I'll just wait until the next gen units come out and Amir benches them. No point speculating now until the results are in. Enjoy the low prices while you can (there's a reason why the ART-capable D&M units are more expensive)!

Well actually that's not what you said at 1st.
You also didn't enlighten us with this "I thought you knew"!? Hmmmm ?

So your "advice" is we should pay more for something that we do not find beneficial or use! WHY!?

I purchased this last week as an upgrade from my S760H. The S760H had no issues and sounded great after running A1 Evo AcoustiX (and tweaking a few things). I wanted the TX-NR7100 because it included Dirac, has slightly more power (on paper), and supports 7.2.2. Can't beat those specs for the price!

Installed it, ran Dirac, started listening. Didn't sound great. Checked the settings via the web interface (l/p: ciuser) and everything looked fine. Then at some point (I think after selecting a different Dirac calibration slot) the audio just stopped. Fiddled with stuff, updated firmware, etc. but no dice. Had to physically disconnect power before sound was restored. So I started googling (I should have researched this more before purchase) and learned about limp mode and protection mode. The fact that the receiver can go into a lower power state without any indication and require a physical power disconnect to recover is unacceptable to me. I wasn't even listening extra loud at any time (65 max maybe?). So I returned it.

If this receiver works well for you, I'm happy for you. For me, the limp mode is a deal breaker. I'll be on the lookout for an X3800H deal instead.

Speakers are KEF iq7 fronts, DM10 center, and Sony CS5 surrounds.

What you experienced is imaginary. Don't you know that the limp mode is mythical and doesn't exist? All the vendors and affiliates including turnne and supermanrob say so!

All kidding aside, it'll be really tough to get a 3800 these days due to supply. You may be better off waiting for BF for a deal on the 3900!

Denon has em in stock at $1399 - why would it be hard to get a 3800?

Audio stopping is not limp mode. Limp mode is where you get lower amounts of sound, but there absolutely is sound. You had another issue. I'm not debating that you should return it (I would) but that isn't limp mode.

I have exactly your experience on the S760H. They're awesome with A1 Evo AccoustiX.
