The Onkyo TX NR7100 is a 9 channel AV receiver that stands out mainly for Dirac Live at $599, making it one of the cheapest ways to get Dirac in an AVR. It is also praised for solid everyday performance, easy setup, and long term reliability, with reports of years of use and no overheating when ventilation is adequate. The main drawbacks are the lack of pre outs, parallel sub outs, and only basic AccuEQ if Dirac is not used. It also may not be the best match for demanding 3 to 4 ohm speakers at loud levels. A strong value pick if Dirac is the priority.

Common Questions (5)

  • No pre-outs are included on the TX-NR7100, and its two subwoofer outputs are parallel rather than independent. If you want pre-outs or more advanced bass management, the RZ30 is the step-up model.

  • If your current receiver already covers your needs, the main upgrades are Dirac Live, HDMI eARC, and HDMI 2.1 support. Older models like the NR676 or NR797 can still be fine for basic 5.2.2 or 2.1 setups.

  • Yes. Dirac Live is onboard at no extra charge at $599, making it one of the least expensive ways to get Dirac right now.

  • It can handle normal listening levels for many setups, but truly 3-4 ohm speakers across a wide range may be a challenge at louder volumes. For that kind of load, the RZ70 is the safer recommendation.

  • These units can run warm to hot, but overheating is mainly a ventilation problem rather than a normal operating issue. Proper airflow matters more than the model itself.

It still looks valid to me. I show $150 off, and I have it in cart right now. Debating.
Worked for me as well. Just ordered to replace my 20-year old Harman Kardon AVR-245.

My Onkyo nr676 is just as good, only missing hdmi earc and HDMI 2.1+, no biggie, consoles are direct to tv and dont need lossless return for games. Bluray player is direct to receiver so no loss in features there. 5.2.2 and 4k is the max I use.

I dont care about Durak or any kind of calibrator, my ears and brain will calibrate just fine. But if my unit dies (had it since 2018- $349.99)), I'd get this one, its almost the same.

Even if your ears can't differentiate between ARC and eARC, the two can, in some cases, not play well together. If your setups works for you and you're happy at that performance level, then kudos, no need to look here. Also, it's pretty damn depressing that we live in an age where one is astounded that their receiver lasts a mere 8 years. 😞

I need at least a 7.1 receiver, with modern compatibility(EARC, Sonos, home assistant). Is this as good as the deals are likely to get? This has everything I want, so I'm wondering if I'm likely to find a 7.2 version for that much cheaper?
If you want DIRAC, this is the best priced DIRAC AVR at the moment by $200 (next best is this device's brand-made, the RZ30, which has pre-outs and DLBC but is otherwise almost the same).

Having setup all these Onkyo units(7100,rz50/30/70).
To normal listening levels, I would say it shouldn't be a problem.

Dirac onboard at no extra charge for $599Another slick deals front pagerEven after almost 6 years on the market..I still say its worth the $599 if its at least as sonically capable as the Onkyo RZ50 I used to ownIts somewhat amazing Onkyo is getting all this time out of these same models. I have never seen this phenomenon beforeAt this point they certainly have long captured their development costs and can sell them aggressively priced. Probably a good thing for a section of the market like slick dealsActual owners seem to be very happy with these modelsI suggest reading through the AVS owners' thread for information from themhttps://www.avsforum.com/threads/...ic#replies
Do they still overheat at some point or have they improved?

Using my personal ownership of the Onkyo Rz50 as a litmus test

I never had any overheating issues

I have never seen that in the AVS forum thread either with owners going back to 2021 when these units were first introduced....it appears these have sold very well and there are a lot of owners out there

If this 5 year old 9.1 unit has everything you want.
You can easily find a used or refurb 7.1 one that will do the same for at least half this cost.

If Dirac is part of the interest.
Look for a Denon & use A1EVO with it.
It's a game changer for Audyssey!
It basically gives you Dirac equivalent performance included on this unit, for free!

Of course. Just hook up the 2 speakers the to Front output and the 1 sub, then in the settings go to 2. Speaker >> 1. Configuration -- set speaker channels to 2.1 , thats it!

Even if you have 7..2, 5.2.2 whatever, you can set it just to use the fronts (Direct) or the Fronts with the sub for music listening. And for Atmos music put it back to the full feature set.

This one on sale is a great price considering infaltion of AV equipment. I would pick one up, but my 676 is so good. Im sure the buyers of this one will feel the same 9+ years from now.

If you mean, do they run warm/hot.
Yes, the least is the RZ70.

Overheat happens when a unit doesn't have proper ventilation.
That can happen to any unit in that situation.

9.2 only on the RZ30. The 7100 has the same SW output to each of the 2 sub outs.
