The TX NR7100 stands out as a budget friendly way to get Dirac Live, with onboard room correction and 7.2.2 support making it especially appealing at $599. The price is often framed as the cheapest current entry into Dirac, and the sound is described as strong enough to replace older Onkyo, Denon, Integra, and Harman Kardon receivers. The main tradeoffs are its age, lack of pre outs, and parallel sub outs, which limit future expansion. There are also repeated concerns about warm running, power limiting with low impedance speakers, and occasional reliability or recovery issues.

Common Questions (5)

  • It is the cheapest Dirac AVR in this class, but the RZ30 and RZ50 add useful extras like pre-outs and, on the RZ30, DLBC and independent sub outs. If Dirac is the main goal, the 7100 is the budget pick; if expansion and bass correction matter more, the RZ30 is the stronger upgrade.

  • No pre-outs are included, and the two subwoofer outputs are parallel rather than independent. That makes it less flexible for external amplification or advanced bass management than newer models like the RZ30.

  • It can be a challenge with true 3-4 ohm speakers, especially at louder listening levels. It is generally considered fine for normal listening with typical 8-ohm home theater setups, but low-impedance speakers may be better matched to a higher-tier model or an external amp.

  • Yes. The receiver can reduce output on low-impedance loads without a clear on-screen warning, and restoring full operation may require unplugging it and plugging it back in. This is most relevant with 4-ohm or lower speakers; true 8-ohm nominal speakers are less likely to trigger it.

  • Yes. Dirac Live is onboard with no extra charge, which is the main reason this model is still attractive at $599. It is also described as the least expensive way to get Dirac Live right now.

Not apples to apples. The equivalent to your RZ900 is the RZ70. Since you've waited this long, would you consider waiting for the RZ71 or you're only shopping by budget?

I suggest getting a receiver that doesn't cost less than one of your speakers (used). You want your system to have some sort of synergy. What's the point of a Ferrari w/a KIA engine?
Hmmm if I recall you have the 3800 with MLs.
What would you say your vehicle & engine are?

"Room correction" generally is massively overrated/overhyped. Just a way to sucker consumers into shelling out more money for fancier receivers while the industry continues to cut corners on the actual HARDWARE (i.e. power supplies) inside the receivers, which is why they keep getting lighter and lighter. Generally, unless your room is a uniquely BAD acoustic environment, RC's most audible improvement is 250Hz and under, iow it yields audible benefits mainly on the SUBS, esp. when compensating for room nulls.
I've had AVRs for decades from most of the major brands. The last 15yrs mostly Yamaha for stability and longevity, then switched to Denon on a 3800 deal a couple years ago.

Hard disagree on the value of room correction. YPAO on Yamaha didn't do much for me, but xt32 on Denon, then A1 on top of that was an absolute game changer. My gear has never sounded close to this good.

Is my room uniquely bad? I wouldn't say so - it's an open floor plan which is challenging sure, but probably pretty damn common to have a mixed use living room/open floor plan these days

It depends.
Do all 7 of your speakers actually need the 140 watts.
If not this might be sufficient.

Big drawback with this is it has no preouts.

If you want to stick to Onkyo, I would suggest looking at the RZ30 especially if/when it hits $700 again.

Completely agree, good room correction is a tremendous value.
Audyssey has always kept evolving & now with Dirac coming down to these mid level units is a great example.

Helps to understand how all this works, not everyone does.

People always talk about setup/calibration.
Thee main purpose/concern is bass frequencies, more specific low bass frequencies.
One big term people always bring up is crossovers, there's a big reason for that.

People bring up room acoustics(rightfully so).
Again thee main concern/issue is low bass frequencies.
People mention "nulls" for a reason!

Thee main reason people keep praising this 5+year old receiver..... Room Correction!

Is there such a thing as a reasonably priced AVR with preouts used or new that will drive 3-4ohm front speakers? Not sure this unit has enough power. The rest are 8ohms.
