OK, I got another question for you food pros Big Grin, my oldest son has become aware of what he's furiously stuffing in his pie hole. Finally figured out that he doesn't eat healthy foods. I've been preaching it for years, but the coaches at school are starting in on the kids. He never believed me though. Anyway, he wants some healthy snacks. I don't mind cooking, but also am curious about what I can buy. I told him nuts were OK (I'm almost afraid to say that after the breast thingBig Grin). I'm trying to ease him into it, bc if it's too much of a change & if he feels like he's being deprived, he won't do it. IOW, I'm not going to go out & buy all fruits & veggies & tell him that's his alternatives. He's a really big kid (not at all fat, just big), so it's going to have to be substantial. I also mentioned that some cererals eaten dry are OK. We've done a bunch of bars & he's tired of those.
Any suggestions? And thanks!
eggs, almonds, cheese sticks, plenty of fruit, peanut butter smeared onto bananas, apples, whole wheat toast, etc. yummy!!

My brother, who is also a big guy but not fat, and has a voracious appetite but wants to eat moderately healthfully, will eat boiled eggs as a snack. Lots of protein and fills you up, and not full of junk like other stuff.

Quote from DealHog :
Great idea, thanks. He always mentions protein, & boiled eggs aren't difficult to make. laugh out loud

Something I make up and put in a ziploc for when I'm hungry is a hard salami and cream cheese roll up. Thin sliced hard salami from the deli and some Garden Veggie cream cheese spread over it and rolled up. Low carb, high protein, easy to make and great to store. They are also good as an appetizer.
Yep, in addition to the fruit I was gonna suggest some of the same things.. nuts, boiled eggs, deviled eggs, string cheese sticks, meat and cheese roll ups.. I use turkey and swiss or ham and pepperjack cheese.. you can also roll them up on a flatbread or wrap and cut them into mini pinwheel type sandwich rolls.. or air popped popcorn maybe?

if you have a WF conveniently close to you, get your bread from there. all fresh baked bakery bread at WF is now completely organic. WF bakes several varieties of fresh bread at each of its stores now, and those bakeries are all completely organic. i get organic whole wheat baguettes there. i think 2.99 for a large, long baguette. they also have smaller ones if just two people are eating or so. I think those are 1.xx. And every week they have atleast one variety of healthy, organic, fresh baked loaf on sale for about 2 bucks. this is all in the fresh bakery area. i usually go in the evening, the bakers know me, and usually put in a fresh batch of loaves into the oven while i shop for other stuff. then they give me a piping hot baguette/loaf all wrapped up and nicely ready for dinner. yummy

plus if you go by the shelves where packaged breads are, they have a whole foods organic whole wheat sliced bread. it has a great nutty flavor, lots of slices, and about 3.xx
all in all, their breads are significantly cheaper than at regular grocery stores and much much much healther.

also, do you have a mixer? i buy unbromated, unbleached organic flour and make bread at home. super easy, very little effort, no preservatives, and cheap - one big loaf made on a sunday lasts us several days. i wrap it in paper towels or cheesecloth while it is warm, and then in a bread basket or ziploc bag or covered dish (my preference cheesecloth and dish/basket cos you know how i am about chemicals in paper towels and zip bags laugh out loud ) but anyways, it doesn't dry out and doesn't mold. lasts days. and you made it with clean ingredients, so you know it is healthy (i use all organic ingredients)

no worries sweetie. you inspired me to get on the ball and get stainless steel bakeware. maybe with tax refund money. my family thinks i am Crazy for being so particular about what I use for cooking and what kind of food/produce/meat/dairy i buy. wait till they see i am replacing all the bakeware. LMAO

oh there are so many places i could go with this, so i'll just say this: it is my left knee that is swollen. Harhar

freud would find it very interesting that you mentioned apples and swollen heads EEK! in the same sentence. DH working a lot these days? laugh out loud

speaking of apples, and WF, i know i multiquoted kay12 and the quote disappeared. so thank you, sweetie, for checking up on me. WF not delivering today or tomorrow cos of snow. Sadwalk so no fresh food! tis okay, tis okay.
how are you feeling today?
Greenie: Hope you are feeling better...WF then may be 2 days later???

Never knew about all organic bread from WF. I am going there this week, so will look around..
I used to bake too, but some time it came out good, some time not.. Then i heard about no kneading bread aka 'artisan bread in 5 minutes a day'.. borrowed that book from the library and tried it.. it came out nice texture, but too chewy.. In the meantime, i got too adventurous and bought their next book "healthy bread in 5 minutes a day" and got all those unbleached, unbromated all purpose organic flour King Arthur brand, and all associated stuff, tried to make bread ..again too crusty and chewy texture..there went my bread baking.. now i buy those organic vermont bread..
Now that i have my stand mixture, i should try to make them again.. i still have that darn flour burried in the freezer..
I am ok now, though really anxious.. i am sleeping with vicks nyquil's help.. night time is hard, i think too much, so ok.. I did self exam again, couldn't locate anything Frown I am thinking to beg the radiologist/technician for the result immediately or as soon as they can..Usually i am not this bad, not have become one like that...
I also makepizza dough [greenlitebites.com] andpizza sauce [greenlitebites.com] from blog, and really liked it. I have to sneak the veggies since DS#1 wouldn't tough veggies much and eat only selected fruits Frown

MOT2.. Thanks..have you finished reading all those books you girls were talking about?

Does anyone know where to find tearpads of these coupons? I see them on the bay but not sure I will get them in time...the bogo is probably only this week, right? Still learning Publix game. Will see if they are back at T later today. Woohoo!
I just found some on Sunday at Smiths/Kroger. I didn't grab many because I still have a bunch of Morning Star and that stuped manager guy was following me around. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) you know because if you check to make sure the papers you are going to buy have inserts you are planning on stealing inserts and stuff Dontknow Did you need some?
Quote from .teri. :
Oh great...I had some Morningstar Corndogs in my hands last night at Publix but thought they would taste bad so i didn't get them...and now I don't have time and/or q's to stock up and I'm getting the feeling from Tootsie's and Gator's posts that they are yummy
I never really liked corn dogs so we only ever bought a few packs and the kids would not eat them so I ended up throwing them away EEK! Maybe I should have given them a good try, they are not real hotdogs so maybe I would have liked them.

all this talk of nuts, breasts, bone-ins and pie holes... did you creatures not make use of your snow day? less talk more action needed. EEK!

dealhog... you've already been given some great ideas on to-go snacks. if you go the cold cut route (i love cold cuts for snacks) just be careful on which ones you pick - want to avoid ones with very high sodium levels and also those that have nitrates/nitrites added. you mentioned cooking... were you also looking for at home snacks or just things he can take to school?

kay12... some breads are designed to be chewy and crusty. you sure this wasn't one of those ciabatta type recipes? if not, then the other thing is: did it have any baking powder in the recipe? if so you have to be very careful when prepping. baking soda reacts with the ingredients and causes the air to rise. overmix the ingredients/dough and you will end up with a tough product because the air bubbles created by the baking powder escape. ALSO, did your bread recipe call for yeast? and if so, did you proof the yeast before adding to the bread? i always, always, always proof yeast before adding it into anything and for me that makes the big difference. also, did your recipe call for bread flour instead of all purpose flour, or both perhaps? bread flour has a higher gluten content, and if you omit/substitute you will end up with a tough bread.

do you have the cookbook the joy of cooking? i like making the milk bread from there and i especially like the cinnamon raisin milk bread. yummy matter of fact might look making some tomorrow.

WF... hopefully when i go to the orthopedic surgeon on friday, i can pop into store. there's one next door. my shoulder and chest have really been acting up today. nerve pain down arm, shoulder throbbing, difficulty breathing. no fun. i am eagerly awaiting that appt. thanks for asking sweetie!

you not sleeping... nyquil isn't good to take just like that. got any melatonin at home? it will help you fall off to sleep and get a rest without drugging yourself.

rach... colic. have you tried gripe water? a boppy pillow? one of my goddaughters had incredibly bad colic. the combination of placing her at an angle on the boppy pillow, plus giving her gripe water helped a great deal. we also made sure to burp her right after nursing so the gas didn't build up. some babies also like to be held upside down (not something i recommend or would ever have the courage to do, but my friends have done this with their kids)

ank, hug

Chicken- 90% of the time it's boneless, skinless breasts. If I'm making chicken cacciatore, I'll use the chicken breasts with rib meat.

Colic- Hyland's colic tablets were my go-to for the kids. Smilie
