yeah, i often don't bother to capitalize etc, but i hate spelling and grammatical errors. i type fast so i often make mistakes but it bugs me and i always try to go back and correct them. when writing to someone above me, i always use proper capitalization and grammar, and i proofread. it bugs me that a coworker is always making spelling errors and grammar errors, even on client emails!

yes, proofreading is key!! spelling mistakes and blatant grammatical errors (or your/you're etc) are a pet peeve of mine.

My perspective is - spelling is factual, it is either right or wrong... it's not a personal judgement, don't take it personally. It's irritating that some people unabashedly massacre words in verbose Facebook posts and completely break down if someone points out an error. No one is perfect, but if you suck at something, don't wave it around in people's face for all to see and get hurt if someone says something. We are all capable of learning, maybe people are trying to help you communicate more effectively, not attack you. /rant

I think I have to disagree with you. I don't think there's any place for the word "ur," opposed to "your" in an academic e-mail setting. I don't think that's a student error or me making them feel bad. If you're a senior in college, you know how to spell "your." I believe it's just laziness and complete disregard for spell check, opposed to a lack of learning. If I have to read an e-mail riddled with spelling mistakes, a complete lack of punctuation (including periods), and spacing issues, it makes it very difficult for me to help the student. I see nothing wrong with asking students to proofread their e-mails.
I do agree that it's ridiculous when people point out errors on facebook, which is an informal setting. I haven't seen it very much, but I don't doubt that it happens. However, there's a time and a place for complete sentences, full words, and spell check.

Everyone can use spell check, but I've come to the conclusion that some people just can't spell. My niece is one of them. She's also the one who is a doctor. Obviously, she's a smart girl. For some reason, she never was any good at spelling. When she was young, she would study for hours & still misspell words. We're so used to it that we all just guess at what she's saying & read on. There's a big difference in not being able to spell & being to lazy too spell correctly though.

Hmm... some how I got this mixed up. I agree where you all disagree and disagree where you agree with me I agree with you and see nothing wrong with asking them to proofread their emails, I was just commenting on a possible reason for the student reaction (no laughs).
As for facebook, I agree little errors here and there in a casual setting are fine. It's this guy I know from HS, he's trying to make it as a comedian and so he writes these posts that he thinks are so witty, but they are so chock full of spelling/grammar issues that you can barely make it through a sentence. Now, he is pretty funny - but trying to convey these jokes online without knowing the difference between bear/bare kills a lot of his attempts. I see people try to help him from time to time and he gets completely bent out of shape. I suppose my rant up there needed some context, so sorry for the confusion!

That is an interesting distinction. I wonder if ability depends partly on how you learned to pronounce and spell? I was taught phonetics, which also means I pronounce stuff strangely b/c that is what helps me spell (I am open to correction on it though ) . I think Red and I were talking about 2 different things (and it's my fault for introducing thing #2, which is my annoyance with spelling correction sensitivity ) ... and yes, spelling accuracy is not a measure of intelligence by any means! This is why I don't think people should feel belittled or hurt when they are corrected. Talking about this makes it sound like I correct people all the time, but I hold back I swear!

Problem is, now that my box is sealed and ready to go... I'm thinking of more things I should put in it. I have a "maybes" box of bras and box of clothes. They are pretty small... but still- a lot of maybes.
