Don't do it. 980 PRO uses 3bit "MLC" actually TLC. Endurance is only half when comparing 970 PRO.
The pcie4.0 controller made it even hotter.
Go 970 Evo Plus or 970 PRO instead.
Let me explain a little.
1. I am disappointed Sam uses lower-tier TLC and markets it in proline. It used to be pro for more reliability and a hair faster speed. 980 pro endurance is the same as 970 Evo(and Evo plus), 2T for 1200 TBW, and 600TBW for 1T version. Only 50% of 970 Pro.
2. Talking about thermal, it would run hot when you using it inside the laptop. How hot is it? On normal MB it would run at 84 degrees and throttle the constant write speed at 4000 MB/s. For reference, 970 Pro runs at a max of 80 degrees. It would be much hot if you use it inside a laptop obviously. Techpowerup 980 PRO [techpowerup.com] vs 970 PRO [techpowerup.com]
3. Original poster got it right, you can not get 2TB on 970 pros. But the same capacity 970 Evo Plus with the basically same NAND Chips would cost you $249, based on Amazon history.
Bottom line: The only benefit is PCI-E 4.0 Speed. You pay 37% Premium and it's run hotter.
Tips: It did not come with an M.2 screw. If your MB doesn't have an M2 heatsink, 3pcs with screws would eliminate any thermal throttle when writing it constantly.
And, 970 pro is not available for a 2TB capacity option.
I agree that pcie4.0 controler make it even hotter.
But, I don't know if this is a reason "Don't do it".
This is a great deal if you want this drive.

I want to use it as my OS drive so I want to clone my current samsung 960 2.5 inch SSD. But the clone process always stuck at 0% and the speed was 0 Mbs.
I searched online but couldn't find a working solution. Some sources suggest it's because the lack of samsung nvme driver but the 980 pro doesn't have a samsung driver as of now.

I had the same several issues when I upgrade from legacy 2.5 SSD to NVMe SSD.
Refer below page about the legacy booting drive and UEFI bios.

And, of course, it supports 980 pro.
