So Best Buy has the Panasonic DP-UB820-K 4K Player on sale for $399. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/pana...Id=6278202

This is not the lowest it's been($350) but if you were in the market for the best player on the reasonable market this is it.

Some things people always ask, what makes this better than the other players:

The main thing that separates all the players is how they process HDR thru tone mapping & their upscaling.

Since there is no set standard, every manufacturer has their own criteria.
This is what separates Panasonic's 820(& 420) to the others, their "optimizer" processing and upscaling is easily better than the others.

Panasonic claims that the "optimizer" optimizes the best picture your display is capable of delivering, whatever it does it does very well.

I have personally compared them side by side to Sony(X700/X800),LG,Xbox and found it easily better than them.

Other common question 820/420 vs Xbox: If gaming is in the picture at all just go with Xbox, no reason to have two components.

820 vs 420:
820 has DV, 7channel output & more intuitive PQ adjustments.
The PQ adjustments most of us would not use/need.
The 7 channel outs are for people that don't want to change receivers/pre pro
DV comes down to how much you value it.

Again this is not the lowest it's been but seems the sale doesn't pop up as much as it did in the past.
If you can live without DV, the 420 is a tremendous value especially when it's goes down under $150, which hasn't happened in awhile.

FYI looks like Amazon has jumped in at $397 and Crutchfield is at $399 also.

If you don't calibrate your display (tv/monitor/projector), you don't need to waste money on a dedicated player if you have an xbox or ps5. Non-calibrated displays will impact quality far more then which player you have (as long as you arent in the $80 bargain basement range). FYI common guidance from AVS and other enthusiast forums:
Priority for AV budget:
V: Display quality -> calibration of display -> source quality
A: Room sound treatment -> Receiver/Amp quality -> Speakers quality

Bad calibration = no point in picking premium sources
Poor sound in room = no point in wasting money on higher end speakers (unless you are trying to hear more clarity in your reflections)

...

People that know what's the best, go here for tips and help calibrating and setting up the home theater.

People that don't care, don't bother with this. Above your pay grade.

I had this player and discs would freeze often. I learned it wasn't just my player, Panasonic's are known to freeze up and have issues on a few Dolby visions discs. I bought a used Sony x700 for 1/5 the price of this and never looked back.
How does one play a 4K Blu-ray disk using a Shield?
So now you need a computer, hard drives, a computer Blu ray reader and a lot of time

Can someone explain how this can improve on, say, playing back a backed-up UHD Blu-ray file on an Nvidia Shield TV? Isn't digital media playback the same across all devices as long as you're not doing some sort of post-processing that alters the original content?

A roundabout way would be to rip it to a computer, put it in an MKV container, and play it back on the Shield.
Seems like a really roundabout way when you can just buy the player and avoid the extra effort and time.

My understanding it only would come into play if you were playing a burned movie from a server or hard drive.
It's more popular with digital streaming but I wouldn't expect it to produce the same PQ as a disc from a player like this.
Not to mention the significant drop on the AQ side with streaming.

Yeah pretty much. My comment was tongue-in-cheek because if you're someone who's buying the 4K Blu-ray player, you're after the best video and audio quality and you can't get this from streaming.
