I have had this for a year now and had 3 incidents of complete OS corruption. I keep backup images updated regularly but it is frustrating. Most recently I did lose a good chunk of data due the corruption happening in between backups. Food for thought.
MX 500 was good a couple of years ago but SK Hynix S31 is faster and higher TBW.

MS 500 1TB 360 TBW
SK hynix S31 1TB 600 TBW

Can't wait until 2TB reach this price point. 🤤

Just a little heads up, companies like phison are warning of an impending Solid state drive shortage too. The microcontrollers they use are beginning to get affected as well. Also chia mining is becoming a big thing, which is crypto mining with drives.

If your in need, now should probably be the time to buy regardless if they are on sale or not.
mining is crashing, and chia is a pre-mined scam, I doubt all these predictions will come true

Hmm, that honestly just sounds like a bad drive. I've got 3 MX500 drives that have all been working perfectly for a while now, and I've even got an old M500 from 2013 that's still going strong.

I don't think you know how this works. These predictions are made based on what's happening now, not if mining may crash or is crashing or if something is a scam. The shortages have already hit manufacturing. We don't see it yet because everything pre shortage is sitting on shelves, in warehouses, on cargo ships in containers. It's a buffer, once the buffer runs dry then we feel the effects of the shortage.

It's a simple process, constrained manufacturing meets increased demand equals disaster.

I recently replaced the Windows drive '0' in a HP 590 desktop with the Crucial 1TB MX500. I now get an amazing ~34 sec from power ON press to actual use (includes 3 HDD's, video card, etc). Windows programs on C: drive and webpages seem to 'pop on' faster now, other programs on the other drives I can't really tell yet if it speeds anything up.

Assuming demand is constant, at a certain point grandma has enough TB, usually the 1 that came with the machine, you don't need 14TB to run zoom meetings either. People bought pc's during the rona, its a big assumption that demand will keep up, and most of the speculation seems to be based on this new scam coin, so color me skeptical. The chinese are smart, they may hedge their bets but I don't see them just going all in on this like with bitcoin.

Probably better off getting the hynix gold for the same price on amazon. This thing has problems.

But without verifiable sources and credible quotes, it could just be urban rumors and fear-mongering for whatever motivation people have.

Yes, there were early articles about the Chia craze but specific things like Phison warning, etc are require sources to be taken credibly. Not saying it is untrue but this is how "I heard it on Internet" stories start. And they have a way of becoming self-fulfilling prophecies if enough people believe them. This is how crypto took off in the first place.

I actually see memory prices starting to drop over the last week or two with impact on SSDs and RAM resulting in more deals. I suspect this is from a weakness in demand for memory because of speciallized chip shortage that they are used with.

Crucial and SK Hynix wouldn't suddenly start discounting these because they expect the prices to shoot up or SSDs would become scarce. They know a lot more about the situation than you or any Internet poster.

So, in short, I am not buying your "sky will fall soon" thesis. Not without credible proof that also explains why memory based components seem to have peaked and started to fall slowly.

I seen crucial corrupt data as well. I know you definitely need to do a firmware update on the ones I had to not see these issues.

Do you use the Crucial Storage Executive application, and enable, "momentum cache"?

I had the Crucial NVME P1 1TB, with the OS installed on it, and whenever I enabled, "momentum cache" it would no longer boot unless I disabled secure boot in the bios. This was on an Alienware Alpha 2 motherboard.

It's a defect with Crucial's software (drivers I suspect) no doubt, however it appeared to be a work around in order to enable momentum cache, or I could not enable momentum cache, and appear to avoid the problem that way as well.

This has caused me to avoid using Crucial storage drives to put OS on, however as a secondary, storage only
drive I'd be confident it would be fine.

Except for new crypto currencies that use SSDs for mining. Right now while you can get an SSD and especially on sale and before inflation hits take advantage of it. GPUs are unfortunately nearly impossible to get right now and there's strong evidence that by the end of the year there will be more supply and cheaper prices
I was under the impression that this was just 1 specific crypto that relied on storage space and that, it's still under development.

If there's more coming then yikes.

If you have an Xbox series X or S, I like using this drive for backwards compat games. I have a 5tb hard drive and download all of my games to it and just copy the games I'm currently playing to this drive. On PS5, you can't have more than one drive attached which is stupid AF.

For Chia plotting, there's no practical use for more than 2TB of SSD storage per 16 processing threads (8 simultaneous plots running in parallel). Multiply that by how much you want to plot simultaneously and you'll realize that for even Chia enthusiasts who are aiming for 1000TB+ you run out of reasons to keep adding SSDs very quickly. It's like "...great, I got it done super fast, now what do I use these things for?" If there is a spike in demand it will be due to people misunderstanding Chia and a huge number of lightly used SSDs will hit the resale market later and drive retail prices back down.
