$40 once collectors are announced? For lots of us that'll be the right price and fit. I didn't think the movies were the greatest (first feels too long, second the best, third is the worst of the three) but I would love to rewatch in 4k and from a modern perspective
It is a simple fact that you are completely wrong. Two towers was too long, the others were literally examples of what a perfect film should be...script, acting, score, costumes, sfx, directing, scenery/location/filmography, tempo, etc. That rotk killed at the Oscars is but one (minor) indication.

Are these not for DVDs? Looks like a disc set in the images

I'm exited for this, but I think it can go lower with prime day coming up or BF (no rush for me; I have the Blu-rays).
More than the collectors edition, what I'm really wondering about is whether they're planning a reissue these with improved special effects. Gollum looked mind blowing 20 years ago, but especially with the higher res releases the vfx is the one aspect that hasn't aged well.
For a 4K release, WB made kind of a splash with this one ... I would have thought now would be a great time to, say, fix the Gollum model from the first movie to match the much better one from 2 and 3. Jackson himself had involvement in this re-release, and yet they didn't touch any of the VFX. If they didn't now, I don't know what would compel them to later outside of a massive shift in the costs involved.
