I'm a little confused about the illustrations....they say they're Tolkein's (and the maps that are well know to any previous reader certainly are) but it also shows watercolor images in the Amazon reviews, that are decidedly NOT Tolkien's (they look like they're from a different edition, one that I have which is three hardbound volumes with art by (Alan Lee? Brian Froud? Someone along those lines), which were done after the movies (many are based on the visualizations created for the movies. As far as I know, Tolkien didn't do illustrations like these. I assume this is part of the usual issue with Amazon where they lump reviews for multiple related things into one glob of commentary. Just be aware.

*edit: yes, the watercolor illustrations showing up in the amazon reviews section are from the 2013 or earlier version, and are by Alan Lee, not Tolkien.**
YOU SHALL NOT PASS... on this deal if you loved the story.
Just want to point out if it isn't obvious to people, this is the three Lord of the Rings books bound into one book.

And here I am, spending $170 on UK preorder, without thinking much how I'm going to justify having another (8th, I think) edition of LOTR in my dusty collection.
It's $160 today. You should get the lowest price during the preorder period plus if the British Pound tanks it will be even cheaper......

I'm a bit meh about single volume sets but that red and black with the sliip cover looks cool..... Color me tempted.....

Is it worth $170 vs $48 for a deluxe limited edition with a different binding? Everything else appears to be the same. Thats a big difference in price!
I think the deluxe is limited to 5000 prints (according to the IGN article) so maybe they are trying to cash in on the colectors. But older versions of the other illustrated eddtions have not skyrocketed in price so that may be a dead end.

A nice middle ground is the hobbit/lotr illustrated set with the artwork by Alan Lee. While not original tolkien art ahe Alan Lee pictures I'e seen look great. And there seems to be a bit more art work with "seventy full-page colour paintings and numerous illustrations "

The movie altered the line for artistic reasons. The original line just doesn't have the same impact on screen. Herbert knew what he was doing.

I think he meant it's $170 after shipping costs. I'm debating this edition too just cuz it'll look pretty…

This looks like a nice collectors edition but not quite as nice as the English version available for pre-order only. I'm holding out for the new LOTR audiobooks with Andy Serkis (He played Gollum in the movies) as the reader. I think they will be available in October, and they're going to be AMAZING! If you're interested, here's a sneak peek of the master at work.

Beats an illustrated Lord of the Flies, or Lord of the Dance for that matter.

Who's the most tragic literary figure here - Gollum, Piggy, or Michael Flatley?

Order this if you want a damaged book. Amazon uses no cushioning with books. It's almost guaranteed to have a smashed corner.
I keep returning non cushioned books that get damaged until they get it right. Took 4 tries last time.

I really don't understand how they started as a book seller and can't get that right anymore.

Is this the best version that's out? Or is there a better version of the books?
Well, you can well imagine that agreement on what version is best will be hard to come by. 😁

My personal favorite was this 1987 Houghton Mifflin (red) hardcover version:

https://www.amazon.com/LORD-RINGS-Fellowship-Towers-Collectors/dp/B00M0NFYTC/ref=sr_1_74?crid=1LFFJ5... [amazon.com]

Years ago this book was chewed up by my daughter's pet rabbit. I ended up replacing it with this 2004 Houghton Mifflin (blue) hardcover reprint

https://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Anniversary-Tolkien-Hardcover/dp/B01E8OTRAM/ref=pd_sbs_2/138-89657... [amazon.com]

These aren't illustrated (other than a pair of nice fold-out maps), but look to be a slightly larger size than this new version. I like this one, but YMMV.

EDIT: Not sure I believe this, but the Target website is showing it on sale for $45.99 with free shipping.

The Target version you linked to is from 2004 with a different ISBN.

At first I was skeptical but I'm happy to see 15k reviews for this already despite it not being out yet - so I'll know my money is well spent in 3 months when people first get their hands on it.
As someone else noted, most of the reviews are for earlier version all lumped together.

His actual illustrations were put on exhibition a few years ago at the Morgan Library (I surreptitiously took some pics of dubious quality at the time) and some of them were released in an earlier book edited by Hammond and Scull, if you want to get some idea.
